Crooked herringbone kitchen backsplash

Hello,

I got a herringbone pattern backsplash installed in my kitchen. Two things:

pattern doesn’t flow from wall to wall in the corners. See first two pictures below
admittedly it took me a while to notice this but on the center wall, the tiles to the left of the microwave don’t line up with the tiles on the right
side. Look at the bottom layer to see what I mean.

I don’t think my tiler would re-do it without charging me extra. I could probably live with it but it would bother me...until I got over it. What do you guys think?

It doesn't look bad, I think it is something you have to decide if it would bother you.

I thought I would show these photos to my husband and his response.

"I could not deal with that. The tile would have to go or be redone." He is very picky, doesn't like clutter and movement.

Now when I look at Houzz photos counter and backsplash corners, I note they don't always match. I think you have to decide what you like, the tile work looks well done. But I am not an expert.

Very pretty backsplash. I would put a vase or toaster oven in the corner and forget about it. I can't tell the difference in the MW area.

ajracine, after I thought about your question, are you saying to take the 2"x4" inch (that is on a 45 degree with the herringbone) but run them in a straight pattern along the edge to line it? That would work. You might sacrifice a sheet to see how it will look to you. As long as you are okay with a 2" wide line of tile running vertical. Those would not need to be "polished off/bull nosed" like I was talking about. In my earlier reply, I was envisioning "rounding off" the cut edge of your mosiac. Sorry about that. I think I now understand. I think I would still go with a shluter edge or a thin pencil liner tile (if it blended well with your mosaic herringbone.) The reason I say that is the border you would created with the 2x4 tiles will pull your eye to the trim line/herringbone joint line, and take away from your pretty herringbone pattern. (or that is what my mind is seeing.)

For starters You selected material that is extremely difficult to install for a first project. Actually difficult for many contractors. You plan to purchase a wet saw that is junk and will make things more difficult. You want a moving tray for mosaics. Spend a bit more now. It's worth it. I strongly suggest the Porta cable for a small saw. Don't forget to notch for screws. You need a lot of wedges. A good rubbing stone or diamond pad as all cuts need to be smoothed prior to installation. Determine which type of sealer you prefer and apply 2 coats prior to grouting without getting the sealer into the grout joints. How will the ends be finished? I urge you to hire a professional for this project as it will test your patience. If the material was purchased at a box store most pros won't touch it. Odds are the quality of material will also add to the difficulty factor. If you go for it I wish you luck.

The stone area looks even and that's usually the most obvious place. The corners, well, I could probably live with that. How much does it bother you? A possible compromise between redo and leave it would be to change the grout to something more subtle so the errors aren't as readily apparent.
