Comments (15)naplesgardener, I heard some folks have trouble with the bags as well. I chalked the problems up to the type of soil and if it contained fertilizer or not. Just because its bagged soil doesnt guarantee its good or nematode free. It could be like some bottled water coming out of some dingy faucet in some garage and being sold for top dollar. My guesses also include that there arent enough holes in the plastic to allow ample air flow for the roots and to prevent molds. Also, the temperature in the bag may be wayyyy hotter than we expect. It may even be composting in the bag while we are trying to grow things. Ricky, DUH! you have provided the missing link to my lack of a cool yard! I will put my T-square and laser level back in the garage! Now, need to think of a way outta this square I created. Maybe add bags to the side instead of moving them away. An on going work in progress...............See Moretrying something new with the Miele ovens...
Comments (26)Geez...the merlot went down the drain after the soaking. I never gave using it in a sauce a thought. First I cut the Roma toms into quarters and removed the seeds and jelly. Then I put them in a straight sided container that I had poured a bottle of merlot in. Kept adding tomatoes until there were only a few that were not covered in the wine. Soaked (marinated) them for 24 hrs, giving them a gentle stir a few times. Drained them into a colander and laid them cut side up on parchment paper...on my oven racks. Sprinkle with equal amounts of the dried herbs and with salt. They were in the oven about 15-16 hrs @ 140. The default setting was 120 but I hurried them a little. Some took less time, so really watch the last couple of hours. I turned a few of the bigger toms. I still have fresh basil growing, will have to see if there's enough... that sounds good. I do plan on putting some in EVOL to soak and soften, but will store those in the freezer too. I found this idea in an old post from the Harvest Forum. Yes, Oldhouse and anyone else, let us know if you try this. Nancy...See MoreNew to Tenn. Wanting to try new beans/peas. Need some education!
Comments (6)Maybe a few comments. Tennesee has lots of climates, Memphis is a lot different from Nash ville as an example. Most pole beans grow well in East Tennesse, sothwestern can be quite hot and humid. The Appalchian region is great for beans and many of the heritage varieties originated in the area. Lima beans. Baby limas have adifferent flavor than the giant limas. Christmas/Calico is one of more prolific giant limas. King of the Garden is the standard for whites. Whether you prefer shellies or dried beans is a matter of taste. Shellies are harvested when the beans are full size and pods are leathery and easy to open. For Dry beans the pods are allowed to dry on the plants, harvested, dried some more, and then shelled. They usually grow in flushes with intervals between harvest. This harvest photo shows a mix of shellies and dry. Cowpeas come in all sizes colors and shape. Zippers have green shells that don't dramatically change colors like purple hull types. For shellies the pods will get lighter in color and be full of peas. Zippers are noted for easy shelling as shellies. If you let dry on the vine, they can then be used as dry peas. They are most desired as green shellies....See More- 5 years ago
