Narrow floorboards - does anyone have these and would you recommend?

We have beautiful original narrow oak floorboards in our hall. We’re about to have a kitchen / diner extension and wondered about continuing this through (would need to find an engineered wood version to accommodate ufh).

Has anyone laid narrow wood planks before? Would you recommend and if so, where did you source from? It’s a decent sized space we’ll have, 7m x 4m, so I think(!) it could take the narrow planks laid horizontally. Would welcome thoughts ans advice, thank you!

Why do you need engineered? The narrow plank hardwoods are quite easy to find and are relatively cheap to purchase. They are narrow for a reason...they are more stable than a wide plank floor. That worked better in homes from the 1920's-1980's that did NOT have humidity control.

I have been cutting for years and my daughter and I love Japanese garden shears for cutting. They stay sharp for years and cut everything even hard woody stems. There are a couple different types we prefer the long ones with both handles white. I'm not sure what the color means but I bought an orange pair and the grip was not right, my mom uses the ones with one handle white and the other red and they seem to do well. I saw them in Peaceful Valley's catalog for $9.99. P.S. I just found this web site and I love reading all of your wonderful expertise, it really helps the spirit on these cold rainy days when I'd rather be gardening!

I'm 6-0 and find it comfortable. There is enough of an incline from top to bottom that allows you to lie back nicely. However, comfortable depends on how you like to sit in a tub. The inside dimension at the top of mine is about 5-7, and less of course at the bottom. You obviously can't lie completely flat on your back, but since you said you are looking for a tub that is 6' or smaller, I doubt you could find one where that would be possible unless it was close to straight sided, and that might not be comfortable to lean back against. When you have a tub with a certain maximum length at the top, increasing the lean decreases the effective length at the bottom where you sit. So you want some lean for comfort, but not too much. Do you live somewhere that has showrooms where you could at least eyeball different style/shape tubs, if not sit in them?

So many thread on this subject. The biggest problem appears to be finding a good installer who doesn’t treat it like granite. Hard to find as this product is new in the US.

@ thanks for the info, it is a 1930a house so that would make sense. We’re having underfloor heating, so would need to be engineered wood.

Ohhhhhhh.....miiiiiiiiyyyyyyyyyhhhhhhhh.

OK...you will need to know that ELECTRIC in-floor heat is NOT allowed with 99.99% of hardwood floors - engineered or otherwise. Yah. Sigh...No one explained that I'm going to guess.

Do NOT listen to the 'radiant heat' sales pitch about it going under 'any floor you want'. They say that...but they know darn well that electric is normally not allowed underneath wood. Why not? Because of the fire hazard. Wires + electricty + flammable materials (ahem...wood) = bad idea.

If you are paying the BIG BUCKS for hydronic (water/gel/oil filled tubing), then you have a different situation.

The issue many people have is the height variance. ***IF, and that's a BIG IF**, the wood floor HAPPENS to be the 0.01% of wood floors that allows electric, you MUST have a slab of concrete over top the wires. Like 1" or so. Oh....noooooo....

That makes for a BIG step up. Now you have to add in the ACTUAL thickness of the wires, and then the thickness of the WOOD. Zoinks! Now we **** could be 1.75" - 2.25" HIGHER than the hardwood floor in the rest of the house.

First things first: which type of in-floor heat are you looking at? Wires? Electric MATS? Or hydronic tubing?

What is your current flooring in the kitchen? Why would you need in-floor radiant heat with a warm wood floor? I can see the want for tile or stone....but wood is a semi-conductor (another reason why you do NOT want electricity running a millimeter below (1/32") below a wood floor....wood can CONDUCT electricity if the wood is wet!). That means it holds warmth better than it lets it go...but it will still let it go....slowly.

A bit more info about what you are trying to do with your kitchen would be REALLY helpful.

What width? If it's 1-1/2" you may be out of luck. Numerous manufacturers make 2-1/4" engineered in a variety of woods.
