Setting home office/dining - between bright living and neutral dining

Should I follow the kitchen and keep things neutral, or somehow be able to tie the living room together with the kitchen by adding a small dining table (that is currently going to be in a corner as an office desk). (note I don't have as many pillows right now, this is an older pic. There's just one blue pillow in the center of the couch, and a beige couch on the other end)

What colors should I choose - 1) Light wood color top, with white base .. or
2) lighter walnut (probably will look dark in cozy lighting) with deep gray (almost black) base. Also is it ok to mix industrial or mid century with the kitchen I have...

3) Something else - please attach a sample picture/link of product - of table and/or chair
Looking for something that ties my colorful living area with relatively peaceful kitchen but somehow fits the space without looking off.

I see you have a little ones The flowery rug would look great in child’s bedroom.

The wall decor going up the stairs should follow the rug into the bedroom.

Keep your open concept area neutral.

Thank you for your response. I think I have to figure out a balance between keeping things neutral and still colorful... Right now there is no play room (we tried), the kids just play with us in the living room/dining area. I also have a just turned 1y old, so don't want to buy anything too big that little one could bump into. All of this being said, for now I'm thinking of investing in a solid office desk (that could be used as a small dining table, more like a breakfast or coffee nook for later, or even to hold a large grand piano). Or to host zoom meetings for my older kid. I love the idea of a dining table, but don't think it will be used as much. Also, the kids (even those visiting) love running around the open space and the living area and a lot of the kitchen is used for toy and book storage :D Lots of people love our rug, but I know it overwhelms the rest of the space :D I tried toning down other décor like pillows, throws etc. so just the rug stands out. But I haven't been able to incorporate that color across rest of the area.... Should I let the rug move where the dining area should be, so the kids can actually use it as their playroom, and the color is at the center? Or should I leave it in the living area....

I'm sorry, but I have to say I don't like the navy (or the camel). The rug color is more a royal blue, i.e.: a warm blue and the navy is a whole other blue, and IMO, they clash. I also, again, think it is just too much saturation of blue. Like NSM's chandy and think it would look great in your dining alcove. I do think you should paint those French doors the same color as the trim, regardless of what color you paint the walls. If you go with the chocolate brown, consider painting the chairs silver. If you go with a light color, I'd paint them black. The silver will compliment the glass top, and the black will go with the base. Btw, it is sounding to me like you have made up your mind and that you really want to do it in the Midsummer Night. It's not a lot of wall area, so you're not investing a whole lot in paint here. You can paint it in the color you want, get it all set up with the new chandy, painted chairs, artwork, live with it for a month (or some agreed-upon time limit) and if your husband (or you, for that matter) still really doesn't like it, you can always repaint it.

Before we sold our last home, I had a really excellent painter come in and paint the bedrooms, a few walls of our great room, our home office, and the entryway in Dover White by Sherwin Williams. He loved it and actually used it on a few subsequent projects. We also loved it. My kitchen and dining area were in a color called "green plum passion" by valspar, and the Dover White complemented this color as well. I think it would look great with a satin white trim and a bright white ceiling. We had similar color tile to what you have on your kitchen floor, which went well with the Dover White. A friend recently painted her condo (which is an interior unit and doesn't get a ton of light) in Sherwin Willams 9109 Natural Linen. She says when she buys/builds her next house she'll use it everywhere... Hope these thoughts are helpful.

Do you have any table or floor lamps in your living room? You need to add more layers of lighting in all rooms, not just can/recessed lights. Did you have lamps on the nightstands when you looked at the Accessible Beige swatches? My nightstand lamps have two bulbs each for lots of light. And you might want to consider covering more of the dark floor, for example in the dining room and entry hall, with lighter rugs, as in the living room. A can of paint is cheaper than an in-home consultation. Paint an entire wall in the bedroom and in the living room and live with it for a week, in all sorts of light. Don't go by swatches, even large ones, and you also can't judge properly with a swatch on top of your current color. I can't help with paint colors because I don't know SW at all, and I'm not a greige person. I know blogger/designer Kylie M. I love that furniture and wouldn’t paint it ... it has beautiful lines, nice details, lovely color, and more depth as is than paint would. I think it works better for a transitional dining room ... it brings the traditional to the mix. I’m a fan of painted furniture, but more for pieces that don’t have original, redeeming qualities (although there are some beautiful examples posted here for sure). There’s nothing wrong with embracing sentimental value, unless it’s something truly hideous. :) I would wallpaper the big wall the bar is on. I like your idea of sconces with the bar.
