The phrase I have in mind doesn’t need the extra ‘s’ that I get from reading the rebus.

I tried to make the "it"s plural on #6, and that did not work.

Well, I was closer to right than I thought I was. Had 1, 3, & 5 right, 2 hit me just as I went to bed last night. Was thinking 'one step forward' for #4. Okay, that's almost right. Why in the world I couldn't come up with the second half of #6 is beyond me! But yesterday was a long, not very good day for me, so I'll blame it on that!

Yep, the rebus actually reads as two it’s. The solution leaves the plural s off. Maybe it’s nitpicking but it always annoys me slightly when the rebus has to be fudged to work

I still got number four wrong though. I thought it was "One step forward, three steps back" ( I was wondering why it wasn't "one step forward, two steps back" Really really bad luck?)

I agree that there are multiple valid solutions for #4.

My guess for #4 was Step out of line.

Mine was Out of step.

For 4 I said out of step and for 2 ,I said shooting blanks.

I thought the same for #4 (one step forward) so my thinking I had them all right was wrong. So of course I agree #4 could definitely have more than one answer! I think out of step works too.
