Installing vinyl plank flooring

We have been looking at flooring options and have had 2 flooring stores tell us that lvp could be installed over our current tile and parquet floors (as long as we buy the right kind)

However, the right side of our house is carpet and the left is a mix of parquet and tile. If we went over the existing floors wouldn’t we have a significant height difference where the carpet was removed compared to where we went over tile or wood? Is there a way to fix that? We are on a concrete slab.

The tile will need to have all the grout joints filled before they do any leveling. If you do not fill the joints the grout lines will telegraph thru the vinyl in short order They can put down underlayment where the carpet is and that will more than likely need leveling as well as the floor must be flat within 1/8" over 10'.

Remove the tile and the wood. You NEVER EVER lay vinyl over wood floors! EVER!

The vinyl has a chemical reaction to polyurethane on the wood. The two products ruin each other.

So you will rip out carpets = $1/sf.

Remove wood floor = $2-$3/sf (glue down = more expensive).

Jack out tile=$2/sf.

Whomsoever told you to go I've the tile/wood is looking to his/her pay cheque.

Go elsewhere. These people are selling you a bridge that hasn't been built yet.

We are using a glue down Mannington vinyl in an office remodel on a slab. Our cabinets will go over the vinyl. This thread scared me so I called my flooring company just now. She said that the cabinets should go over the flooring as planned unless it is a floating floor which ours is not. She told me Tarkett Transcend is a floating floor. Do not put cabinets over this.

It's your decision. A floating floor might need transition strips because it exceeds maximum runs. Or it may not. the installation instructions for the product will tell you the limitations of the floor. As for appliances being put back into place, that is a personal decision. I prefer to see the whole floor dealt with first, and then have the appliances moved into place. This prevents damaged to exposed edges of the planks (vinyl planks are very picky about the perfection of their edges...on little nick and you need a new plank). If you feel you need the appliances in place (so you can eat enough food to complete the project) then feel free to do it. But realize the inherent risks (trip hazard; damaged edges) if you install the appliances before the floor has been completed.

Transition strips are required for ALL floating flooring....not just LVP with cork backing. All floating floors need to have the ability to 'move'. A hardwood floating floor needs them. A cork floating floor needs them. A laminate floating floor needs them. A linoleum floating floor needs them and a vinyl floating floor needs them. The question becomes HOW OFTEN do you need them. I have a massive problem with the Floor & Decor website with the installation suggestions. They state that you can install up to 6400sf without transitions. I have to call BS on this one. The reason: cork. Cork is EXTREMELY dynamic. It REALLY LIKES to stretch its legs. In fact a cork floating floor can expand as much as 1" over 25 linear feet. That is HUGE! MASSIVE! Almost unheard of. So...are the transition strips "really necessary"? With cork, yes. With vinyl, no. With cork+vinyl, yes. Floor & Decor has used the "click edge" documents (the fastening system) without taking into consideration the dynamic nature of cork. The 6400sf of continuous install is fine with an SPC core and the edge system. But the technical data becomes useless as soon as you add in vinyl and cork together. I would pop off a baseboard (somewhere) and look to see if your expansion gap has been maintained (I want to see 5/8" or more). If the floor has pushed itself up to the drywall, then you know you have a problem that can be fixed with transition strips. The easiest fix *might be to cut the floor at all door jams and drop in a low-profile t-moulding. As annoying as this is, it could the be the simplest fix. But first the moisture source needs to be addressed. I still think the Bostik has been overwhelmed and I think the cork has grabbed the moisture and pushed everything to the absolute limits (ie. the walls).

I am wondering if I should just take my multipurpose tool and cut out the plywood piece towards the door jam. Then put the t molding over that. I think there is a t molding that i can use that would go from vinyl plank flooring to a lower floor.

Wow. We went to several stores and they actually suggested that we go over everything to save money. We were planning to remove the floors, but they said if you bought rigid core vinyl it would be fine.

We can definitely remove the carpet ourselves, but I’m not sure about the other two. The wood is glued down, and I think the kitchen tile is on top of sheet linoleum. The sunroom is probably directly on the slab. We removed the bathroom tile ourselves and it was not fun. Plus after It was all up the slab was not level (it had several high and low spots).

No vinyl over hardwood! You are being told the salesman's pitch. Flooring PROs don't install things the way they are sold. Or we shouldn't.

Pay for removal of you can't do it yourself. And pay for the subfloor prep. Old concrete needs expensive prep. Like $3-$5/sf.

It is the cost of flooring. This is vinyl. Not laminate. Laminate can run over hard and tile. We don't recommend it (because it is cheap and bad And lazy) but it is VERY possible with laminate.

It's your call. Vinyl...no. Laminate...yes.
