"Elmer, the reason they get so much snow and bad weather there is because of all the moist air coming off the ocean....." That's what I said and tried to be brief. I've spent my life in the state immediately to the south, where through the 700+ miles from there to the Mexican border, all areas are affected by that very same phenomenon on a much greater scale. Rain and snow on the west facing sides, deserts to the east of mountains in the lee. I actually had a class in university on the subject, The Geography and Regions of California. Weather variations are significant and are a prominent factor that influences differences from one part to another. . Didn't you see Fun2BHere's photo a few days ago with the palm trees in Newport Beach in the foreground and snow on the mountains in the not too distant background?

Nickel, love the pic with twins. Both of my great grandmothers had twins, one of hubs, great grandmothers had twins. One of my grandmothers had twins , many cousins in our families had twins. It has been fun , pregnant relatives find out how many heart beats. Just curious, more twins in your family in the different generations?

Nicole, I have them completely assembled, light bulbs installed, and ready for a second set of hands. I don't trust myself up on a ladder by myself :/ At least two weeks, maybe four. My baby will be home Thanksgiving, go back for finals, and then come back for winter break. So somewhere in there.

Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia Stromatolites are basically microbial mats formed by the interaction of microorganisms like cyanobacteria with sedimentary materials, which build up in layers over centuries. They're not very photogenic, are they? But they are incredibly important in the development of the earth as we know it: first, because they represent one of the earliest forms of life on earth, dating back 3.5 billion - yes, billion - years; and second, because they produced oxygen which, over time, increased the atmospheric levels to a point capable of supporting more complex life forms. Stromatolites are rare today, found only in a few spots on the planet, with this colony in WA one of the largest and most diverse.

This is a contrail and the contrail's shadow and a sun dog (I think that is what the rainbow is).

Most likely an irridescent cloud. A sundog is a specific condition where it appears as if there are extra suns in the sky formed by a halo due to ice crystals...pic from the internet:

OK, I found the name of it. It's a circumzenithal arc. I have a picture of one that I took. It was straight up in the sky. It stayed there for a long time.
