Help!Need advice on wood for stair railing and treads
Comments (9)I do not see how that can be true. A post above said $50 a tread....not knowing but assuming you need anywhere from 13-18 treads, thats roughly 900 right there....labor should be the exact same no matter what. Request a break down quote for him to itemize everything. Or better yet, find a different installer... btw, maple stains just as good as anything else. the majority of wood products on the market are maple. From cabinets to floors, most are maple based due to its staining abilities and smooth grains. I build custom drum sets and use maple 99% of the time, sometimes birch. I stain all kinds of different mixed colors and tones. I have never conditioned the wood, and have never had any issue with staining the wood. Most customers even order a ebony stain. However....walnut grains and natural tones can not be beat by anything IMO. It is a beautiful wood. If that is what you want, go for it. Get various bids, etc. If you love something, do it right from the begining. Everytime you look at your staiway and see a maple wood with a walnut stain, it will look great, but you will always regret not real walnut!...See MoreToronto, ON: Interior & Exterior spiral stairs & Ontario Building Code
Comments (1)The best way to find out is to go to your local building department and ask your inspector. S/he will make the final call in any event, but will also be the most knowledgable with respect to the local code requirements....See MoreSpiral stair landing
Comments (8)I have no knowledge about building of spiral staircases, but I do know something about their history, and that might interest you. Mike mentioned that being right-handed makes a difference in the "feel" of walking up a spiral staircase -- he's on the right track. Back in the middle ages, castle owners designed spiral staircases to benefit a right-handed swordsman. The stairs'd be built so that a swordsman could stand on the wider portion of the step and have full use of his right arm. In contrast, his opponent would be forced to fight while standing on the narrow end of the step, and use of his right arm would be impeded by the staircase itself. His chances of winning his way up the steps was greatly impeded by the design. Wanna know about murder holes? Arrow loops? Crenelated battlements? Parapets? One of my degrees is in history. In more practical terms, do you have any experience with spiral staircases? I thought they were super cool until I stayed in a beach house in which the second floor was ONLY accessed by a single spiral stair. Getting a suitcase up those stairs was a pain. I wouldn't want to move a bed upstairs or carry laundry on a regular basis. I think a spiral staircase is cool as a second staircase ... but not as an only staircase....See MoreHardwood Stairs: planks vs solid treads
Comments (10)I’m hoping that it’s not going to be too difficult to find the skill and expertise needed to prepare the treads. We’re in the greater Indianapolis area. Is this a unique enough project (preparing stair treads by matching stain and replicating hand scraped texture) that we might struggle to find someone? Quick Google searches suggest to me that many species of wood treads can be purchased online, including treads with various degrees of distressing, but I’d prefer to work more locally so we can see what we’re getting. I’m pretty sure the flooring store, which has a very good reputation locally, will be qualified to do the installation. I need to get back in touch with my contact at the flooring store for thoughts. I might also reach out the man who custom built our kitchen cabinets to see if this is the type of carpentry work he might do (he did a beautiful job on our cabinets)....See MoreLucky Lisa
