Counter overhang - what is the lease size for the overhang?

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel and I was planning on a counter overhang on the new peninsula (old kitchen was L shaped, new is U shaped as in picture) but not sure if there is enough room. I know it should be 10-12"+, but I can probably only get 8" before it starts to take away too much of our table space. It will not be used as a daily eating spot, but just extra seating or a place for a snack where you can still see the TV in the next room. The advice I'm looking for is not what is standard, but what is the least amount of overhang that would still be useful. If it turns out I don't have enough space, I'll still have the U shape for extra counter space and a place for people to lean. Also, I can make more space in the table area by putting my 36X36 table against the back wall making it a 3-seater instead of 4 (3 of us live here). Any thoughts on that? Thanks in advance.

Our peninsula has a curved overhang which measures 4” at each end and 10” in the center of the arc. I understand that the recommendation for an overhang which allows for seating is at least 10-12”. My husband and I, of average height, are quite comfortable eating almost every meal at the peninsula. Perhaps, with a larger overhang, one could position the counter stools closer in, but we’re fine as it is.

Can you take a board and position it 8” out from a countertop to simulate the overhang? Then test out sitting there. Good luck with your project.

Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!

What size is your counter overhang for soapstone/other stones?

Originally thought we'd go for 3/4" but now we are going with 1" on our soapstone. We have inset cabinets too. We tried the 3/4" using a larger sample of stone and it seemed like it needed more overhang. So I agree with pharaoh on flush looking good for a modern look. The 1" seemed to give the more of an older look to it that we wanted. I won't know for sure if we like it though until we see it. I hope soon! If you haven't you should do a mock up with some boards, plywood etc. Your cabinets look great. You are getting very close! Good luck and have fun!

ETA The bars used under your counter look like mine & it does look like they're sitting in a notch out but it's not deep enough.

If you have another eating area, you can make your kitchen eating area a banquette with a bench on the wall, and get the correct overhang. If you can't do that, don't do an overhang. 8" will not be enough and will just feel awkward. The recommended distance for counter height seating is actually 15". The 12" is for bar height.

I read from https://www.caesarstoneus.com/blog/quartz-countertop-overhang-how-far-can-you-go/ that the standard island overhang is 12 inches. Any less than that would be uncomfortable. Have you thought about a regular edge instead?
