Viking Range Burnt Ceramic Tile Backsplash

Our kitchen remodel was completed about 4 years ago. Slowly over the years the tile behind the range has started to yellow and melt in spots. The tile is ceramic and according to the original contractor was the correct type for behind the range. I’m trying to determine if I need a different back guard before I replace the tiles. Or if the tiles are the problem. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. That’s what I thought from googling but wanted another opinion before I went and spent the $ and did the labor.

I am surprised that ceramic tile could melt at the temperatures likely at these positions.

Of course as other threads here have noted, the wall behind the tile has to be non-combustible for 6 inches in depth. That means no sheetrock and no wood studs without the back guard in place.

I read in another thread about taping tiles to a piece of cardboard. I think I'll try this over the weekend w/the running bond pattern I'm considering. Another reason I'm unsure is because most running bond seems to be done w/the brick-shaped tiles (subway tiles?) but I selected square tiles. paddytc: I didn't know about the bathroom rule of thumb but it makes sense to me. I feel like the BS and floor will compete visually if the patterns match even though the tiles do not. I want the BS to appear restful, not busy or competitive.

Thanks everyone! I'm usually a believer of "you get what you pay for" so that's why I'm a little worried about buying the cheap tile. However, it's the perfect color - I can't find another one that coordinates as well as the cheap one! It's either the cheap ceramic subway or white dolomite marble in 2" x 6". We'll have dark, distressed wood floors, white cabs with vintage finish, raven caesarstone on the perimeter and cambria torquay on the island. Our family room and kitchen are one big, long rectangle so they need to coordinate. Our family room has mostly cool colors - blue, gray, white and espresso. Any thoughts??

Is ceramic crackle tile a problem as backsplash?

I have Sonoma Tile crackle in a light cream. My stove also has about a 10" riser (which I've grown attached to). My b/s has been in for about 16 months and I haven't had a single problem with it. I was warned that it needed to be sealed before installation so that grout wouldn't seep into the crackles. The tile guys said they sealed it but I'm not convinced they did. Anyway, no grout got into the crackles at all. The surface looks the same as the day it was installed. I don't fling spaghetti sauce every which way when I cook. The crackling in my tile is very fine. I don't really see it unless I get up very very close. Instead it just adds a little life to the surface.

This is great information. I wish the contractor and designer would have shared this before we installed but now I know how to fix it myself. I appreciate everyone here helping me out.

That is not ceramic tile. That is Tabarka tile which is hand painted terracotta!

and I hope the original poster did get a metal backguard riser for the range because the symetrical areas of tile dicolouration and on rear slotted metal seems to indicate the oven vents are/were causing this two years ago and probably still.

Tabarka tile is DEFINITLEY a ceramic product. I would think it is the glaze that became damaged from excessive heat not the tile.

The decorating industry for some strange reason has their own definition of ceramics though it is not correct. following are items that fall under "Ceramics" which includes Porcelain, a clay, often referred to as the Queen of clay because it has no contaminates (iron and other organic material) Terracotta falls under earthenware. It is a ceramic product fired albeit low that has been around for eons.
