Anew Gray or Analytical Gray for bathroom

Hi all! Requesting some advice from all you color experts out there. I'm renovating a tiny bathroom. Will have tile halfway up the wall in the bathroom, and to the ceiling in the shower. There is no window so it will be just artificial light, a 3-light fixture over the medicine cabinet which is plenty for that room.

Looking at either SW Anew Gray or SW Analytical Gray for the paint colors. I understand from reading other threads that Anew Gray has reddish/purplish undertones while Analytical Gray has greenish undertones. I do see the undertones when I look at the paint chips in the bathroom. The tile is a beige/greige/gray pattern that seems to also have pinkish undertones. So should I fight the undertones and try to drag it back to neutral with Analytical Gray, or just go with the flow with matching undertones with Anew Gray?

I know painting samples on the wall would be the best, but the tile is just going up today and the contractor is bugging me for paint colors NOW!

You need to paint very large samples and see what happens on the wall. No need to do it directly on the wall.

Tell the contractor to hold his horses. You need the lighting in 4000k to see what the paint will look like.

if you can’t wait, I would go with the green undertone, and cross my fingers.

Don’t trouble yourself with undertones, check out their objective measurable attributes instead. (See link above)

They are both near neutrals from the Yellow Hue Family and can be prone to colour shift in certain imbalanced lighting.

Anew Gray sits closer to the Yellow-Red Hue Family and so can be inclined to shift purple in lighting which spikes more in blue/violet wavelength.

It doesn’t happen in every setting so as mentioned above, they require testing in your space to see how they render.

Analytical Gray may also shift purple but maybe less inclined to do so than Anew Gray as it sits just a touch further into the Yellow Hue Family. It is also more colourful than Anew Gray (more Chroma).

Analytical Gray may in some settings, show moments of greenness, a little like the sensation you might note when viewing a bronze.

Again you need to see how it behaves with your lighting.

Okay, you are completely caught in the eddy of picking paint color, so I'm going to throw you a lifeline to get you out of that endless, swirling hole. Here are the Distance (very nice color) and the Indigo Batik. Do not look at or for any more colors. Go out and get sample pints of the Distance and Indigo Batik and paint large swatches of each on all four walls (or however many walls you have with wall space which will be painted). Paint the swatches so that they run up to the ceiling ,down to the baseboard, behind the toilet, next to the sink, window, shower, etc., because it is the paint contrasted with the other elements in the bathroom that will help you know which is the right color. Live with it for a few days, going in periodically and seeing what your immediate reaction is when walking in. Then, make a decision, go get the paint for that color, paint the bathroom, and do not look back. Distance Indigo Batik

I have anew gray currently in my bedroom on the walls and alabaster on the trim. I think it would be beautiful to have the trim and perhaps the door also sw anew gray and the walls alabaster. Another look depending on the height of your ceilings, you could paint the ceiling anew gray with alabaster walls.

It's the same color. Just put it on the floor so you can see it next to the floor. I think it pulls out the light gray/beigey colors in the flooring. I don't know though.

Alabaster and anew are gorgeous together. Alabaster’s white will be crisper and is beatiful with anew gray better than repose gray because their chromas are greater than .20. Colors from the same hue family which in this case is yellow, need a .20 or more difference to have a cleaner white. However, Alabaster‘s chroma is .66 and Repose Gray chroma is .59 are less than .20, when painted together something happens to the lower chroma color when there isnt a .20 difference. Yes, it will make your whites not as bright and clean, but also activate the lower chroma color which is repose gray‘s complementary color. Repose gray belongs to the yellow/orange family. What complements yellow on the circle wheel? Look at a color wheel and straight across from yellow is purple! You paint alabaster with repose gray, repose gray will look purple bluish. I have done it and I honestly dont like this combination. If you don’t want costly paint mistakes, I would follow this formula every time when painting. If you love repose gray find another white that will give you thet .20 difference. If you have your heart set on it you can get the look .20 difference with a lot of other colors.
