Super helpful conversation everyone! We're deciding between centered and off-center for a slightly different reason... we're off grid and the room in question has some large passive solar gain windows and also that's the part of the room with the highest ceiling area. Our primary use for the ceiling fan is to circulate that heated air back down into the living space in winter. We're not going to have much if any use for summer cooling (I'm writing this on April 27 and just yesterday they were enforcing snow chains on the main road to our place!) I also don't like the sensation of air blown at me by a ceiling fan because it dries out my contact lenses. So the whole purpose of the ceiling fan, really, is just for winter circulation of warm air. In that case, would people agree that we should put the ceiling fan as high up the sloped ceiling as we can and as close to the area of hot air, even though that means it won't be centered in the room? That same area will also be an "area" in terms of space layout because it's where our guests who like to be warm will likely congregate. Thanks!

"Ceiling fans are most useful in the center of the room because they draw up air to the ceiling which is then pushed back down to circulate the air in the room. A smaller fan could be less noisy than a floor fan. If you have a wardrobe, setting a smaller fan atop the wardrobe could move enough air to help. Lasko is a great brand for fans. In my experience, they last. With your ac running, you'll not be opening your windows but those box fans for windows can be used elsewhere and on the low setting, those I have are less noisy than even much smaller fans. There are also clamp fans -- some noisier than others -- that might let you be more specific as to where you direct the breeze -- such as just above your face -- if your headboard or overhead bed frame (shown) or a heavy lamp on your bedside table has a place to clamp it. Whatever you decide, if you're trying to breathe comfortably to sleep well, decor takes a back seat to that. That said, the difference between a portable fan as an addition to your room and a ceiling fan is that an off center ceiling fan -- a permanent electrical fixture requiring a pro to move/remove it -- could adversely affect the resale value of your home.

I live in Florida. Two rooms, kitchen, family room have skylights in the center of the room. The fan is approximately 3 feet from the skylight. In the kitchen, the ceiling is slanted. The skylight is on the slant and the fan is a few feet to the other side. There was no option in either room. No one has ever remarked about it and I worried initially, but now I don't even notice it. I love the skylights and had no intention of removing them for the ceiling fan. In our bedrooms, our AC vent is on the upper side wall, not in the ceiling so the fans were centered. Don't know if that helps. Jane
