Herringbone backsplash advice
Would like to put in a 3 x 9 subway tile backsplash with 3 x 6 herringbone behind the stove top. Would like to avoid a "picture frame". Would it look OK to fill in the entire wall behind the stove top and between the cabinets with the herringbone? I would separate the horizontal tile under the cabinets from the herringbone with a 1" trim piece in same color. The microwave will be replaced with a hood. Cabinets painted white. Granite countertop.

3 years agoHow exciting you are doing a kitchen reno. Good for you. I had that same tile in a kitchen in my last house. I was so happy to replace it. Do you have any more photos of the kitchen? How large is your space? I think Herringbone is lovely and subway tile too if you love it. What color did you want to paint the cabinets? What kind of a hood are you having in that space? Is it something custom made? Your cabinets are very pretty and you could get away with keeping them as is and changing some elements like the counters, hood and backsplash while still working with the cabinets. Although I do understand the love for a white cabinet kitchen. Do you have an arch on those cabinets? It is hard to see with the photo. Are you doing this yourself or hiring a painter?

I love reading Kylie's blog. She has a great set of questions to ask you about your wood kitchen before keeping or staining. I agree with her advice.
What does that mean? It means that just because your cabinets are solid wood, doesn’t mean they actually look good and here are a few reasons why…- If they’re outdated in style or stain (like the previous photo) you won’t be doing the wood any justice. Overly orange, yellow, red or pickled (pink) wood cabinets can look outdated, especially if the rest of your home and its decorative choices don’t support them
- If you have TOO MUCH wood (ooooh the innuendos – I’m biting my tongue) it’s not good. If you have anything beyond wood flooring and wood cabinets (ie: wood panelling), that’s an AWFUL lot of wood (emphasis on awful) and they can dilute the impact of each other
- If you’ve updated your wood flooring and it doesn’t coordinate with the cabinets, you’ll be devaluing the look of them both

Comments (19)Agree about herringbone..I'd go for narrower tile if that possible in order to do herringbone, if no-I'd stick with offset. It's also hard to predict who'll be the tilers..some are very good, some are not as good as others. Takes some skill, as mentioned upthread. But as backsplash comes last you'll know much more and you'll have time to decide. Do you have samples of everything you showed? any possibilty for you to put them in the order they's be installed? Granite, flooring-horizontal..tile, door sample-vertical. You'll get better idea on how will look irl, because surfaces tend to read differently when light hits them at a different angle. If you did that already-great.. if you can make a photo for us-even better. how large is the kitchen, what's the layout, will it get enough light, is it open, semi-open? What the space/s next to it will be? All this would influence my choice of combinations of colors. All yours supposedly work well together, but the context is important. And I miss it a bit, because I don't know the space you're working with. As for the painted cabinets I find them all high maintenance , at least every time it's not me who's cooking, regardless their color(I have a light taupe. Because I like taupe. Btw I like purple too so it was a tough decision)) Then it's not like I'd love every wood stain out there too, so.. To me, that'd be a lot of cool, darker gray, but colors are personal, and do depend on a context which I lack as of now. Also one can add interesting hardware(depending on whar direction kitchen takes), colorful accessories and many other things. If you have linen door sample at home I'd try it with the granite sample too (in the order they'd be installed). Not because it's more timeless or whatever, but because you might see it doesn't work(for example too creamy next to the granite..hard to see the color on the screen)-or on the opposite, you might like it more than gray. With this specific granite. In short if you can try and stagger the samples together and look at them in different lghts (morning, afternoon, artificial if possible..yes, I know it's a new house, we brought a flashlight with us, at some point, electricity wasn't there yet, to look at the colors at night) ..it's worth the time and effort....See MoreCrooked herringbone kitchen backsplash
Comments (2)It doesn't look bad, I think it is something you have to decide if it would bother you. I thought I would show these photos to my husband and his response. "I could not deal with that. The tile would have to go or be redone." He is very picky, doesn't like clutter and movement. Now when I look at Houzz photos counter and backsplash corners, I note they don't always match. Comments (7)Tilebar gets mentioned a lot, but I prefer to support local brick and mortar independent tile stores. Tilebar doesn't manufacture their tile, they are a reseller, just like your local tile store. Find a few local tile stores and borrow some sample boards. When searching for my own backsplash tile, I found the same tile locally at a slightly better price than Tilebar. It isn't that quartz and marble can clash, any material can clash with another! Some here just believe that marble-look quartz and real marble should not be next to each other. Plenty of examples of it working too! You've done a nice job with the kitchen so far, so trust your judgement and the real colors you see in the space. Also no need to rush. 3 years agoI disagree with Shannon’s comment. I just did 2 1/2 x 8 Herringbone backsplash. It’s not hard to do. We love it. I had help from my friend who does tile but I thought it was easy.
