subway tile backsplash in herringbone pattern-Photos? Advice...

Hi,

We are thinking of doing subway tile in a herringbone pattern for our backsplash. Does anyone have any pictures they could share of a similar design or have any thoughts?

We are going to have creamy white cabinets with black counter tops - very traditional. The backsplash tile will be in a very, very, very light green - almost khaki color. (My husband wants color - I would do white.)

Curious on if someone has seen this done before. Will this look good or too cutesy or too busy?

Hi Patty,

I don't think I've ever seen a backsplash that is entirely herringbone. This photo below was an inspiration photo for our kitchen's backsplash, or at least for the framed piece above our range--minus the stove pipe. We used a narrower frame, and smaller subways, but love the result.

I'm drooling! I LOVE Herringbone subways and will be tiling our next bathroom in them. It's just an incredible look...

Cutesy? - Never! Too busy? - Are you the kind of cook/housekeeper who always has a lot of 'stuff' on her countertops? If you do, then it might get busy -- though I could hardly think of a better incentive to change my ways... ;-)

I think the gray grout would like nice with the white subway tile and the gray colored walls. Here are some other pics with similar styles. Mustbnuts: Funny you should suggest the Encanta Horn tiles, they look just about the same as the onyx 1" tiles I was considering a while back. What good taste you have! Ha ha ha. Do you think a smaller tile like a mosaic would look better than a larger, say, 6" x 6" square tile with the checkerboard floor? Laura: Thanks for your suggestion, too. I have really been leaning towards the Gramercy Park tiles so your suggestion is right on. It looks elegant to me. Do you think the two-toned pattern would work with the floor or would you suggest all one color in the same configuration as shown?? (Thanks for the compliments on the house, by the way. It's been a work in progress. My husband likes to tell the story about how I found the house - fixer upper - and he said "No, no, absolutely not...then 30 days later we owned it". He doesn't regret it so much now though, as we are making it more comfortable each passing day.) ;-)

This is for a new house. Yes 3 x 6 is nice but do you think it is too chunky? 2 x 6 better? Beveled or flat white tile? White grout or light beige or light grey grout? Our cabinets will be white, counters will be Silestone iconic white (bright white), stainless appliances. On a related issue, as an alternative, what about a basketweave/trellis/lattice tile? 3D would be nice to add texture. Anyone know about the arched white whisper herringbone/basketweave tile? Any photos of something like this would be nice. Thanks! T

You know bad work when you see it - and this is it! Upon arrival and finding out he was doing glass tiles, why did he not leave to get the proper cutting tools? Red flag. And yes, typically there are spacers, and tiles are set before grouting, so you could have been consulted about placement etc, and inspected prior to grouting. Another red flag. Someone who complains when they do work in your home, isn't going to do a good job. Yet another red flag. I learned the hard way in doing home renovations if you don't speak up, people try to get away with a lot, or won't do work up to your standards - unless you have a great general contractor who shares your same high standards. I think as the homeowner you have to be proactive; you always have to inspect and ask questions, during the job and definitely before you pay anything - or hold out a certain percentage until you inspect finished work. I guess you can try and dispute the payment, if you used a credit card and then request that the contractor to remedy the situation. Of if you paid the big box store, dispute the charge with them until you get satisfaction. Keep going up the food chain! I've heard so many bad stories about big box store work, tough lesson. I hope you get it resolved. Keep us posted.

That's the plan Bill! -- We're trying to decide how much to do in traditional subway layout and how much to do in herringbone.

But since you're here Bill - (sorry to derail PMertz) - How much more PITA is a herringbone layout compared to straight subway?

For someone who knows what they're doing, there's a little more thought involved with reference to layout and execution, but once started, it's every bit as easy. If you look closely at the pattern, it's just a matter of stacking the pieces, each piece a half tile off from the last, first on their sides, and then on end. Piece of cake!! (It just LOOKS complicated!)
