So... What's the next 'hot' paint color going to be?
Comments (28)Oh, I mentioned this on the thread about color matching problems. I searched and searched and settled on Glidden "Shell White" even though Glidden is a cheapo paint brand. When I first started painting my house, and I didn't know anything about paint, I bought Glidden. I actually found it to be easy to apply, durable, and washable. There seems to be no discernable fading after 4 years or so in my very sunny kitchen. But anyway, since I was at Home Depot buying a Behr paint (yeah, not really much of a step up from Glidden) the guy asked me if I wanted the Shell White matched to Behr. I said sure, but as it turns out, the color is a bit lighter than the chip color. (After the fact I read that Behr has a very white base and colors color matched to it will often come out lighter than they would in their manufacturer's base.) Also, I think even the actual Glidden color would probably just look different on the walls than I expected from the chip. I thought it was an obvious COLOR - kind of a darker cream tone, like a light navajo white - and as I was rolling it on, over the builder white that was left in that room, it looked very obviously different from the builder white. The builder white looked very grey in comparison. Even as I looked at it in the bright white paint tray liner, it looked very cream-colored. But then when I got a whole wall done, and it wasn't contrasting as much with the existing paint color, it looked white! It was so much lighter than I had been expecting. I really thought I'd show it to my husband and he would think I hadn't even painted. But the more I look at it, the more I love it. It's a very light cream, not remotely peachy (which was something I really wanted to avoid.) None of the color chips online look remotely like the color chip in person. To me, online, it all looks much darker and peachy. Basically my rooms just looks clean and fresh, with a hint of warmth, but it is not really a color. It's just a bit warmer than white. The trim is Benjamin Moore China White, and I think that's what the walls were, too. It looks fine on the trim, but was a bit too cold and "unfinished" looking for me on the walls. The extra little bit of warmth makes the room look "finished" but it is still very light and neutral. So there you have it - Glidden Shell White mixed into the Behr base. There may be a very comparable Benjamin Moore color, but since I've had zero problems with cheapy paint, I really see no reason to switch. I've tried to find a good photo of it online (my room is currently piled up with crap) but I can't find one. There was one photo in a room which clearly got very little natural light, and it was hard to see the color....See MoreCrown Moulding going out of style?
Comments (26)Something is going to have to give. In my experience, it's the homeowner who gives.... "That is within our standard tolerances," is the national anthem of poor tract quality. A homeowner makes a complaint, and the first thing out of anyone's mouth is, "That's within our tolerances." But of course, you don't know this until after you close and you're trying to remedy warranty items. Master bedroom return vent cock-eyed by 30*, so that it is clearly not parallel to the wall/ceiling junction? Standard tolerances. Hallway wall so warped that baseboard is far enough away from tile to necessitate 1/2" (yes, half an inch) of caulk? Standard tolerances. Master tub chipped in several places, and master shower acrylic sidewall punctured resulting in "repaired" (visible only after dog slept up against it all night) 3/4"x1" hole? Standard tolerances. Wavy sheetrock? Standard tolerances. Mesh backing on mosaic tile backsplash sticking out all over kitchen, and simply painted to match the wall? Standard tolerances. Cabinet surround for refrigerator bowing and coming away from wall, because someone cut the panel too long and decided to squish it in place? Standard tolerances. More and more, consumers are asked/forced to accept junk. Eventually, I think either folks will get fed up with it and just stop buying new-construction tract houses, or we'll become so desensitized to it that it'll just be "the nature of the beast," and collective standards will drop further. My money is on the latter, unfortunately....See Morewhat’s next? shelf liners…
Comments (10)@chestnut3 I use cork liners in the pots and pan drawers, under utensil and silverware trays, and on the floor of the tray cabinet. Since my trays do not cover the entire width and depth of the drawer space, overflow of utensils are placed directly on the cork in those voids. I have washable liners for all the other drawers and shelves in the kitchen. I unfortunately acquired an oil stain on one of the cork liner in a pots and pan drawer, but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather have a stain on the cork than on the cabinet. I like that cork prevents sliding, doesn't shift, deadens sound and protects the cabinets from stains and wear....See MoreIs floor tile going out of style? Does all LVP off-gas?
Comments (8)@Lindsay K, I do remember older sheet vinyl would sometimes have a strong odor. I made a comment regarding LVP off gassing in another thread. I'll copy it here: ...I am SUPER sensitive to any off - gassing and smells or odors! I once could not get out of bed for over a week. Finally traced it to a mattress topper (made from a petrolleum based product). Even after it was removed from our bed, just rolled up in the corner of the bedroom, it affected me. It took me over a week to recover after it was completely removed from our house! All that to say - we laid 750 sq ft of SuperCore Xtreme - NOT a single problem with odor, off-gassing or anything! We used Asheville Xtreme. I wasn't thrilled with the color when I picked it. Just the process of elimination. Now that it's down - LOVE it! Just enough knots for character. Great neutral color. (Website pics on SuperCore.com are not a good representation, IMO.) I have mentioned in other comments - it's in our lower level where people come in from a sandy beach. After a full summer, NOT a single scratch. Mops easy - no spotting, no smears, just clean. 14 adults and 15 grandchildren almost every weekend!! I do not know about other brands of LVP....See MoreLindsay K
