Is the Dragon Tattoo series good?

I just picked up the 3 paperback books of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series from my neighbourhood little library. Have you read them? Are they as good as the hype?

It's been a few years since I read them but I really enjoyed them a lot.

Wait- before you get Non-stops, is your "part sun" morning sun, afternoon sun, or dappled all day? For me, Non-stops do beautifully in morning sun. When I tried them where they were shaded most of the day with afternoon sun, they fried. Depending on your conditions, the various new Begonia boliviensis hybrids may be a better choice. They are also tuberous, but they can handle more sun and heat. The "Bonfire" series has been out for a while and comes in three bright colors. They can get spectacularly huge, but are trailing so they wouldn't be top-heavy. There's a newer series called "Crackling Fire" which stays smaller and bushier, and comes in more colors. I think "Crackling Fire" might be the right size for your planter boxes. I haven't tried them yet but was tempted by them at the nursery. And yet another series called "Million Kisses," which I've only seen in catalogs so far. And there's a seed-grown variety that looks similar to "Bonfire" and might stay smaller. "Santa Cruz Sunset" only comes in red-orange. I grew 6 from seed last year, which made one hanging basket because they were babies. You'd want to buy them as started plants. Seeds have to be sown by early February to have plants for summer. The nice thing about tuberous begonias is that if you have a good spot to store them and ignore them over winter, you may be able to keep the same plants for years. They get larger each year. My "Santa Cruz" basket has revived and should fully come into its own this year. Might need a bigger basket. :-) Oh, and I almost forgot. DragonWing has a smaller sibling, BabyWing. There was always a way to rebel when one was at that age. I think though, that it's getting harder when there's so much more "anything goes" these days. It seems every time the rebels go to extremes, the extremes become more mainstream or at least familiar enough to no longer be shocking. Back when I was growing up, a rebel only needed to grow his hair long...the longer, the more rebellious. I recall what a todo was created when the "mop head" Beatles first came on the scene. I mean their hair was actually quite short and they wore suits and ties for goodness sake! I'm not sure what kids will do next to rebel...I mean tats are common, pants can't go any lower...they even make suspenders to keep the pants from falling completely down, skirts and shorts have already been shorter than short, make-up has already gone totally goth with black eyes and lips, hair has already been every color of the rainbow and gelled to the sky, earlobes have been stretched, tongues have been split, genitalia have been pierced and ringed. I honestly don't know what's next. I remember back in the hippy days, my FIL, a prof, who was very matter of fact with his students, would comment on their long hair and baggy bell bottoms and say, "You know, if you want to get attention, you don't have to go through all that effort....you could just walk around with your fly open." (Please don't misinterpret...I'm not suggesting all tats are a statement of rebellion.)

Chris Bohjalian, who's been mentioned already, also had a book out of compilations from a column he wrote when he moved to Vermont. It's called "Idyll Banter," and I really enjoyed it. Right now, I'm reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," which is a few years old. I'm enjoying it. "The Distant Hours" -- (fiction) about a letter posted in 1941 that reaches its destination in 1992 -- is one of the titles on my to-be-read list. "A Vintage Affair" I read a few books back. Really liked it. A mystery to go along with your cruise theme? Mary Higgins Clark's "Santa Cruise."

casey nfld, If you're not hooked in the first 100 pages then I'd say move on to another book. I used to be the type that had to finish a book once I started it. But with age sometimes comes wisdom, or maybe less patience, so now if it's not speaking to me I move on to the next book on my pile. Life is too short to waste it on books that don't interest you. colleenoz, Thanks for the heads-up, I think I'll just skip the movie. I'm sure someone is already planning a US version of the story. They'll probably change the story so much, except the sex parts!, that it won't be recognizable. I'll also be skipping that movie.

I read all 3 one after another when I was laid up with a broken ankle. I thought they were great!!

I loved them. They are very intense in spots so be prepared for that.

Yes I enjoyed them. But it can be violent in spots so be prepared. But most thrillers are these days.

IIRC, Law & Order SVU did a show that was a take-off on it.

I read the first two.....then watched the movies. BOTH were EXCELLENT! And as I recall very violent. That girl is a badda$$!

The books are good, the film was an interesting comparison. Take aways:

1) Swedes drink a lot of coffee

2) It's kinda funny to see the bad guy drive a Volvo wagon.

Jasdip, I am also a big fan of the series! It was difficult to put the books down. Yes, make sure that you read them in chronological order.

I enjoyed the books very much. I thought the writing was incredibly clunky in spots. (Start counting how many times you read about someone making a sandwich!) You won't mistake it for a crafted masterpiece. It's more on the junk food end of the writing spectrum, but still an enjoyable read.

Wow, I'm glad I asked!! I feel good for picking them up; they're in pristine condition.

I'm still reading my Outlander books (yes in chronological order). But I'm going to read these right away.

Slightly OT coming up, Jasdip, but since you mentioned that you are reading through the Outlander series, I suggest trying the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan sometime if you enjoy multiple-book series. I really enjoyed it, especially as I totally lucked out buying the entire series at my library's book sale one year, all 14 and all brand-new hardcover books!!! These are fantasy-type genre, so perhaps not for everyone. Just thought I'd mention them as filling a lot of time during pandemic reading!

I think it depends on what you like to read. For me I wouldn't be able to pick them up. I love true crime. :)
