Large Kitchen vs. Large Living Room - Remodel Design Dilemma
Comments (6)@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout....See MoreRange vs gas cooktop over oven, and 30" vs 36"
Comments (3)I found that the size played a bigger role in aesthetics than I thought. In a very large kitchen, a 30 inch range may look underwhelming but you may be able to compensate for that visually to give it more presence. My kitchen has a very long wall. I had initially been leaning towards a 36 in induction cooktop with wall ovens placed elsewhere. Because of the proportions of the room, and some other considerations I went with a 48 inch midnight blue Aga Elise induction to be surrounded by white cabinetry and a blue island. Once the range went in, it still looked too small for the space so I had the cabinets on either side painted in the same navy blue to give it more presence. You are wise to consider the overall proportions of the room. And yes, aesthetics do matter....See MoreKitchen Conundrum: Dual-fuel range vs. Cooktop + wall oven/microwave
Comments (6)I know several appliance store owners & service reps I do business with. They told me it is true that microwaves have a shorter life span than ovens in general. So, I always suggest to my clients who want a mw/oven combo to get the appliances separated & stack them in an oven cabinet. As technology changes, if the microwave goes & you want a different appliance with same width, then it's usually easier to replace & more cost effective. I suggest keeping to standard appliance widths & cabinets with openings standard widths (30"wide opening will give you more choices now & future.) I also prefer slide in stoves, because they are easier to replace vs cooktops that the counter is cut around for. Ideally I like a slide in with an extra oven in a taller cabinet. I personally do not use microwaves anymore. When buying appliances, I highly suggest buying locally with an appliance store that services their products. Their knowledge & support is valuable when installing & if you ever need future help they can service it. Wishing you success with your future kitchen:)...See MoreTiny kitchen dilemma: Corner cooktop or cooktop next to fridge? Help!
Comments (32)Option 3. It gives you a very functional and esthetically beautiful kitchen. I would spend the money and scrimp and save elsewhere in a heartbeat if I had to. For example, if I had X amount of money saved up in the budget towards new appliances or a fancy backsplash tile, I would rather wait on one or several of those things verses settling for a crappy layout. Those things can be added later as you save up more $, but the layout is a done deal. There are quite a few things that I would find really dysfunctional and/or just plain annoying working in the first two layouts. I would kick myself daily if I purposely chose to drive myself crazy! 😖...See Morekelleg69
