Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with discontinued cabinets!

We moved into our new house in June and want to add two base cabinets (an 18" for double trash bins and a roll-out 6"), attached to existing base cabinets. The old owners bought the Schrock cabinets at Menards in 2007. Well, Schrock no longer has retailers in the whole state of Minnesota, and I found out today that they changed stains, designs, and manufacturers within the last 14 years. Does anyone have advice on how to approach this? Thank you!

Kemper/Diamond/Schrock is all the same company, with the products all produced in the same factory. Unless it’s a completely discontinued door, you should be able to find it. And then everything can be painted to match if the stain has been discontinued.

@User Does that mean I can buy a specific Schrock cabinet at a dealer that sells Kemper or Diamond cabinets? I just looked it up and there are dealers for both those brands in my city. I had no idea! Thank you!

Check into PPG's Breakthrough paint. I haven't used it but saw some samples at the paint store. Tried to mar it with my fingernail. Couldn't. Then I tried scratching it with a coin and the only result was a bit of metal from the coin rubbed off onto the paint. The person at the paint store said that the paper mills are using it on concrete and driving forklifts over it. Supposed to have excellent adhesion, early blocking resistance and very good elasticity.

If you don't have any luck with leads, there are specialty companies that manufacture drawer fronts specifically for Ikea cabinets, and they may be able to replicate what you need.

Laura, where are you located? I do have the Akurum 12" base pullout in birch. It's assembled but has not been used, and the Nexus birch front has no handles, so there are no holes drilled into it. I do have 2 sets of 15" w x 24" deep drawer dividers (for shallow drawers) , but they're currently still in use. They will be available sometime this winter, we're planning to use the cabs elsewhere but won't need the dividers.

We often leave doors open. This is why I wanted a dutch door but they were too expensive and we are not crafty enough to convert a door. We also let our old horse, goats, chickens, ducks etc wander about property and destroy all attempts at landscaping. (used to have a bottle lamb that came in house looking for me and checked the doors sounds cute but they don't housetrain - gross) My horse will go inside anywhere garage, shed, chicken coop for chicken food. He puts head inside windows left open in cars and trucks he'll check for crackers, chips, bread, and some fruit but not apples- weirdo. On one of his foraging trips just inside kitchen door he slipped a bit and rammed down on one tile that cracked. He is not invited in but he watches doors. Animals are now locked up when parties and bbq are thrown as they forget they are livestock and get pushy and graze the appetizers which is really the dogs job. kinda funny I suppose if you are not used to it, but predictably irritating if you know better and let them out to find your garlic bread gone. So my need for impervious flooring - mini farm. I did use our dirt when selecting colors too!. thanks for all the help I couldn't think of how to finish entryway on a budget but these ideas help.

We're dealing with something similar. As part of a larger remodel, we're adding a small peninsula (2 cabinets plus filler) to a kitchen that was remodeled in 2014. The cabinets are from Diamond and the paint color was discontinued. Diamond was able to provide unfinished cabinets with the same door style, plus the paint from the original formulation. Fwiw I was not confident that the color match would be exact, so I added an undercounter refrigerator to separate the new cabinets from the old. It turned out to be an elaborate and expensive fix - they were just delivered this week; I'm holding my breath to see if it was worth it!

Also, when I was debating how to proceed, I brought one of my existing cabinet doors to Lowes, which carries Diamond, to see if I could somehow find something that matched or blended well enough. It's more accurate than trying to gauge the colors online.

@smalloldhouse_gw Best of luck!! Please let me know if you are happy with the outcome--I am especially curious to see if the color matches. If you could attach a picture, that would be great too!

The colors would not match regardless. 14 year old finish will definitely look considerably different even in the exact same stain & top coat on brand new.

The best you can do is take a good pic of the doors and drawers, from a medium distance, showing the overlay, and then take off a door to go visit the shops that carry KDS. A weekday morning, when they are slow. Or call ahead and find out the person that has been there the longest.

You’ll have to plan to have the whole professionally painted so that everything matches. If you don’t like the door style, buy all new doors from elseshere cheaper. The professional refinisher that you find should have sources for that.
