Green-eyed monster

Like so many familiar expressions, the phrase green-eyed monster comes from Shakespeare, Specifically from Othello (Act III, Scene 3) when Iago says: “O, beware my lord, of jealousy;/It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock/The meat it feeds on.” The reference is to cats, tigers and others of the feline tribe who are noted for toying with trapped birds or animals, “mocking” them before feeding on them. So jealousy – the adult kind of which Iago was speaking – is often a blend of love and hatred, and thus it seems to toy with its victim before consuming it.
