Liar’s bench

In the days before radio, television and the supermarket, the county store was often the center for exchange of news, information and gossip. Usually there was a long settee in front of the store where customers could linger awhile and converse. Apparently a goodly number of customers failed to stick to facts in the accounts of their own doings, for, in New England at least, such a settee became known as a liar’s bench.
