Comments (20)I'm still leaning to the 1840s rather than the 1850s. Hannah White's cap is a lot more like this example from 1828 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Harding_Mrs_Blake.jpg than the example from the 1850s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ingres_Princess_Albert_de_Broglie.jpg which as you can see is a mere wisp hardly visible at the front. By the late 1840s the earlier style would be getting rather old fashioned, though older women do tend to hang on to the styles of their youth. :-) Also, I don't think Hannah looks to be in her 50s in the portrait. Women of an earlier time tended to look older at a given age than they do today. Check out this tie from the 1840s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ludwig_des_Coudres_001.jpg Young people then as now tend to be "trendy" :-) Also this fashion plate from 1848 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mens_fashion_plate_1848.jpg The centre man's outfit from tie, shirt, vest, coat, hairstyle and even extended sideburns is _very_ similar to William White's younger portrait. So if the portrait was painted in the late 1840s then William would have been about 20 and Hannah in her late 40s, rather than well into her 50s....See Morequilter's portrait
Comments (14)Annie, that sounds neat. I love period movies in part for the costumes. I love old photographs for that reason too. I have recently been scanning old family photographs into the computer, so I can say that there are no old family portraits that have quilts in them. Of course, my side of the family were not quilters. Still, the old family photos from my husband's side (which were quilters) don't have any quilts in them either. I suppose that only in well-to-do families where fine needlework might be considered appropriate as a sign of wealth would it be included in a formal picture. The few formal photographs in my family were taken at a photographer's studio where he used his own props and backdrops. There's a question: Does anyone on the forum have an old photo with a quilt in it?...See MoreVintage Portrait of Lady
Comments (20)Many times a portrait of someone was painted in costume. Diana was a popular costume....so the matronly figure really has little to do with who might be depicted. http://www.wikigallery.org/wiki/painting_332859/(after)-Ferdinand-Bol/Portrait-of-a-lady,-three-quarter-length,-in-the-guise-of-the-goddess-Diana...See MoreMy sink has a bar behind it with no back splash and I am going insane.
Comments (23)Thank you all, last night when I was handling the dishes you see in the strainer I realized I do need a much deeper sink. I never really paid attention to it but things like that red salad bowl or the glass pan have far too much air space when they're in the sink. The part to the left of the sink would bother me more had it not been a perfect spot for the strainer to go (that way we aren't moving dirty dishes over the clean dishes to get to the open half of the sink) and surprisingly it doesn't spill much on that side even if we do use the faucet over there. Luckily there's plenty of room to the right of the sink for placing larger dishes that need to be washed....See MoreBeth H. :
