We have a lake house that has an open concept. I’m trying to decide where to put a fireplace, and also how to set up a sectional. The fireplace would either go in the middle between the patio doors, or in the far corner. The dining area is to the right in the photo. I’m not sure which option would be best...

Hi @debdecal! What a gorgeous lake house!

If it were me, I'd put the fireplace between the patio doors to work with and punch up the symmetry of the windows and ceiling. But it wants to be quite substantial if it's going to be there, even if you use an LCD fireplace. You need to put on the fireplace show. If the masonry/rock/tile chimney effect doesn't go all the way up to the ceiling, it will be dwarfed by the room. If the television must be there, can it be concealed in some way?

We don't see the whole flow of the space, but I would probably put one leg of a sectional where your blue sofa is (back facing the camera) and the other leg facing the dining table. (Personally, I would forego the sectional and get a couple of armchairs in that location instead. But that's me swimming upstream.) You can always try out locations for a sectional using the two sofas you have and see where you like them.

Not sure if it’s the coloring or not. But the gray couch is where I’d put the sectional. As far as FP I can’t really see the other space you were thinking of. I would like to see more pics of the space bc I’m not sure tv is in an ideal location either.

Hi, anita212. I think your room size can accommodate two seating areas. The arrangement below is pretty much to scale. It features a 7' sofa and four arm chairs that are modestly sized (about 36" x 36"-ish). The two seating areas are bridged by a low bench. Most of the seating can enjoy the fireplace. It appears that there is a door leading to another area to the left of the fireplace and I've placed a console to its left. Hopefully, this will give you some ideas.

It's always difficult to position furniture in an open floor plan, especially when there are so many walkways and doorways. I would place a sofa on the long wall to the left of the fireplace, and another sofa perpendicular to that facing the fireplace. That defines the seating area. Then add a console table behind the sofa facing the fireplace, a coffee table in the center, and end tables on either side of the sofa on the long wall. Add a club chair to the right of the fireplace, an area rug and you're all set!

Congratulations on the new home! When deciding on a room arrangement, consider both the space and how you live. Unless you want reclining chairs, sofa facing the fireplace, then the fireplace is too high for a tv. So, then it should go on the other wall. What type of furniture? The most flexible type is a sofa and 2 chairs. Why? -can be rearranged in several ways -can be used to lie down on -guests prefer their own seats, so you have a total of 4 seats if no one uses the middle of the sofa Maybe you rarely have guests. Fine......then is there is reason you want a sectional with a chaise? You may have a good reason. It will work....just make sure there is a reason you want it. A chaise on the end of a sofa makes for an awkward furniture arrangement. If you are talking about a sectional with a chaise........that gets into what I call a "trap" (hard to get in and out of and forget a coffee table). So, get what works for you.

I personally do not like TVs above the fireplace. I would put the TV on the wall to the right of the fireplace and get a rounded ("L" shape, more or less) seating unit that faces the fireplace and the TV wall. A sofa table behind on the side of the kitchen would create a visual barrier but be a place to put lamps. Ideally, put some outlets in the floor so cords do not run across the space. You still can put small end tables at either end of the sofa system. Whatever coffee table you buy would be somewhat dependent on the shape of the sofa, but so many things will work. You can also put a swivel base chair (club chair, recliner, whatever) in the corner of the TV wall and fireplace wall, for more conversation seating. Good luck!
