I'm also debating to put the sink/dishwasher in the island. (If stays as is, there will be a cabinet in between the fridge and dishwasher).

This is a kitchen mantra/flow that you can find online and houzz - Ice (to store food), Water (to wash it), Stone (to prep it), Fire (to cook it) its all about the flow . For the space I like the current layout. I think having the refrigerator next to the sink is a plus; having a window above the sink is a plus. I take it you want to interact with company vs having your back towards them ?

Thanks Andre. My thought is that the stove is not centered with the island (It is with the fireplace across the room). Further, it's not centered on the wall. So I'm contemplating centering with the wall but then it would be further non centered from the island and then not centered with the fireplace either.

It’s entirely unnecessary to center a stove on a fireplace. Center it on the island, only because it’ll give you good prep space between sink and stove. But if you move the sink, that changes everything.

And make the aisle bigger because it’ll be difficult to get into the oven with only 42 inches.

An L-shaped kitchen with an island (or table) and the sink on an outside wall with the range/hood perpendicular to the sink wall is just about as optimal as you can get. I wouldn't change anything. Unless you're a Benihana chef, I don't think having your back to the island is a problem, and you're totally over-thinking the "symmetry" issue.

As an aside, what are the dotted lines in the family room?

Function will be a benefit every day. Symmetry makes an impact in two dimensional drawings. When you're in the 3D space- not so much. I'd swap to a 30" induction range like a Bosch 800. Link.

The dotted lines is an existing deck to be removed (home is going through a major renovation). If I move the stove to the right, it’s going to be even closer to the entry way to the mud room so I feel this is less optimal than already exists (less centered on the wall).

I‘d really like to stick to a 36” range.

The only change I'd make is to increase the size of the aisle between the range and the island. Maybe add 6 inches for a 48" wide aisle as emilyam819 suggested. A 36" range is a great size!

Is this a kitchen for cooking or show? If the former then think about function first. In this case of moving the range left or right a foot or two you should think primarily about what will be in your cabinets (I think you'll be good for counter space either way). Work out those details now. You don't want to begin doing that and then wish the range was 6" farther left to make a drawer stack a bit wider so some things will fit.

Agree w/ above about 48" minimum aisle. We did 49" aisles and 55" from range to island - and very glad we did.

What range(s) are you considering? Are you planning uppers along the range wall?

The location of the range looks fine as it's drawn, and leaves a nice prep space between it and the sink. If you're considering putting the sink on the island, I'd suggest adding a prep sink there. Instead of prepping in the corner, you can prep facing the room. You haven't drawn upper cabinets, so having symmetry in those (if you plan to have uppers) would be the only reason to readjust the range location, IMO. Also, if you store dishes in drawers on the island, across from the DW, helpers can unload the DW or gather dishes to set the table, without entering either prep zone. The extra seat can go on the short side, where it makes conversation during meals easier.

Whether you are right or left handed may change which way you turn from the cooktop to the island to grab something. This might suggest how the cooktop should be placed relative to the island.

How are you going to ventilate the cooktop? Specifically what is the plan for the duct to get outside? Do you have vertical access all the way to the roof? Does it matter where the range is along that wall? Etc.

Seems like a very easy cooktop to vent, as the exterior wall is only a few feet away. We had our microwave vented to the outside in a similar configuration. You don't need to go all the way to the second storey roof to vent it, you vent it through the wall.

And right- and left-handedness just seems to be overthinking a very minor issue.

Thanks to all for all of your comments; very insightful! I will move the island to 48" space all the way around and will most likely leave as is. The vent will be going directly outside just not sure where exactly. I will definitely be putting in uppers as well so want to make sure the symmetry will line up. In terms of appliances, am thinking Viking or GE Cafe line (My sister has the Cafe line and is very impressed with the setup). Thanks again!
