Design Dilemma The Old House Exterior

Help Needed!!! Residing our house and need design ideas

Will be residing our house very soon. Most likely will be residing with vinyl due to cost constraints, but adding natural cedar details. Front of house looks like a bungalow, but back of house has mid-century butterfly roof. We love MCM style and would love to bring this element out as much as possible. Looking for ideas on how we can do that with colour and placement of cedar details. Help us please!!!

I'm assuming the wood siding was painted and that's the reason for residing????

Are you sure you can't have the siding scraped? Older homes than yours still have their original siding.

Super cool house, agree - can you scrape? Vinyl would sort of kill the vibe.

We really appreciate you all taking the time to send your suggestions our way!! Many ideas we haven't thought of but are definitely considering. I love the idea of replacing the cedar planks with siding and eliminating the side slope of the roof by adding siding! We agreed that many parts of this house are dated and were unsure as to how to update this 1970's gem!! Removing the hedges is a definite and happening today! Yay! Repainting the front door for the time being is on th list as well!! We want to tackle the pavers first and are having a difficult time choosing the paver color. Beverly... Chicago brick pavers were on the list and we also considered charcoal or trimming the chicago brick with charcoal. Would love suggestions on color !?!?!? Also, we live in Florida... Not sure if that makes a difference.

I wouldn't call this a real Tudor, more a mish-mosh with some Tudor trim. That is why it doesn't look "right" to you (or me). Half-hearted gables, the door is wrong and lacks importance, it altogther seems not graceful. If you don't want to pull off the faux half-timbers, you could paint them out -- make them fade into the overall siding. You need to decide which direction you want to go -- I think there might be things you could do to "fix" the Tudor look to an extent -- changing the dark paint in the gables would be a start, maybe adding another texure (stone or brick) around the door area. As many have mentioned above, the right color scheme can make a huge difference. My inclination would to go in a direction that might suit the overall shape of the house a bit better though. Your roof's shade of brown is not a bad one and can work with several greens, blues, reds and, of course, neutrals including a few grays. You are lucky that you can paint which gives you infinite color choices. If you don't want the color to pop too much because you are close to the street, choose a muted tone. There are lots of gray- blues, blue-grays, green-grays that would lighten up the house but not be too strong.

"This front is just a mess." That is your first impression. I suggest you live with it for a few months before doing anything. Surely you will change it, but you don't yet know what it's like to live with the existing garden. The experience of it may shift your understanding slightly. mad_gallica said "you have Sun Ra but you want Bach" -- maybe. But maybe you don't know what you have or what you want. Give it time to sink in. What's the rush. No film crew coming, is there? There are philosophies that result in what someone has carefully planned and built in what is now your front garden. It may not be your philosophy, and that's fine, but just "try it on" and spend some time in those "clothes." Then you will come to know not only what you don't want, but you will know WHY and you may even know what you DO want, and why. I don't see it as a maze, but someone in a big hurry undoubtedly sees it that way. In some gardens, indirect paths or spirals are made for meditation or for giving the inhabitant a few extra seconds in the day to smell the roses, or in other words, to appreciate the peaceful feeling a walk through greenery can bring. With combined families, whose garden is it, anyway? ;) Last comment -- when entering the house, you may find you never use the front door, but enter through the garage. If you entertain a lot, a meditation front garden may not be quite the thing. But don't be too hasty. Live with it for a time.

In my experience teenagers rarely study out of their rooms and a kids table is a pretty useless piece even for the 6 yr. old. I think get the stuff you have to have first and then see if there is space for a sofa that is quite a small space for 2 kids to work in not to mention the age difference. I have teenage International students and they do google classroom but it needs to be done in a space where there is no interruption so I guess it depends on how you are working this .

We've been told that some of the siding is warping and peeling away from the house due to the elements (we live in Vancouver BC and its very wet here), and the cost to repair the current wood siding would cost almost as much as residing the entire house.

Vinyl on that large of an empty field (the 'butterfly wing' on the left) will most likely show lots of waves and canning. I understand following the angle of the roof with the siding, but it usually is more successful on steeper angles. If it were me, I would be looking into alternative materials, like fibercement/Hardie, steel, or stucco (panels). I would separate the two wings visually with either horizontal and vertical lines mixed with solid. The front, and the garage (if that is what is on the other side of the swingset) I would "inadvertently" exclude from this design, just as the original designer did.

Ugh. Don't use vinyl. I put it on my house in NY and need to power wash the mildew off every two years. Our climates are sort of similar with plenty of wet humid days. Your house is very cool, but I don't really like angled siding - it was used here in the 1980's a lot and now looks very dated.

From the pics, it looks like it's hard to see the sides from the front - there is no rule that says all four sides need the same material. Hardie makes a fibercement panel system for board and batten, and this might be an interesting choice for the rear (?) wall. Good luck
