Tiles shouldn’t be cracking or coming off the wall. That is usually a symptom of a deeper problem. Have you investigated if you’re getting water damage on the other side of the wall? Underneath?

Agree with Celadon. Once you have determined that your shower is okay, I suggest you look at European or Canadian tiles. 15 cm (150mm) equals 5.90551 inches.

Well, yes that's why we want to take out some of the cracked tiles and investigate, but once we do, then we have to replace anyway, so its all part of the same issue . . .The tiles aren't coming off the wall and the cracks are mostly hairline.

The wife of the PO of our house was in a wheelchair and the cracked tiles are towards the bottom, so may have been wheelchair impact cracks. But also could indicate the seal of the base was faulty . . . some of the ones along the edge are clearly from impact and really poor installation . . . it's a large handicap accessible shower.

Could you use contrasting tiles and make it a design feature instead of attempting to match since matching might be difficult. Since you wouldn't need that many tiles, you could contact some of the smaller tile companies and see if they make it in sizes you need. I needed a thin porcelain tile for my balcony and wanted a specific color and style so I wound up doing a special order with a tile company.

I am not a pro but thought that if one removes tile from a shower, the waterproofing system could be compromised but you should consult a tile pro to confirm.

My husband has installed a lot of tiled shower surrounds in his construction career and also repaired and replaced his own tiled shower surround and completely gutted and redid the tub/shower surround at our last house. The problem is that if we remove any of the tiles, if we can't find replacement tiles of the same size, they won't fit in the open spots no matter what their color. And since we just want to replace the broken ones, we'd rather not take out a whole lot of them in an attempt to create a new pattern. At that point it would become more of a gut job rather than a repair job of a few tiles. We aren't that fond of our current shower to put that much effort into it at this point. We don't want to redo the current shower because long-term plans call for removing it in favor of a soaking tub. Since that would be part of a complete bathroom gut, we just aren't there yet with time, money and devotion to this house long-term.

I know this is a common issue. I had some friends who had a lovely shower with gorgeous antique porcelain tiles from a famous tile house, but a leaky shower pan, and they could not find any replacements so were stymied as to how to fix it without ruining it. So they just used on of the other two showers in the house.

I know from my recent hunt for 4x4 tiles that tiles that are marketed as 4x4 are often not. 4.25 x 4.25 is common, but I was able to find some that were a bit smaller than 4x4 as well, which is what I used. What I didn't find was any tile marketed as 4x4 that was actually 4x4. The moral of this story is, call some manufacturers of 6x6 tiles and ask what the dimensions are, or contact a tile shop and have them help you.

I can't imagine dealing with 6" ceramic tiles in a shower.

Pop them all off and start anew.

Many of the new fiberglass stalls are very, very nice...and, easy to clean.

This shower is the size of a small room since it was designed to accommodate a wheelchair. We are not into redoing it right now, and frankly it's not worth the time or money since we may move or completely tear out the shower room and put a soaking tub in there. So I'll live with a few cracked tiles if I have to. We rarely use that shower anyway, we have another smaller one.

I did figure I would have to seek out a lot of possible tile manufacturers. Just wondering where to start since we have zero tile stores anywhere near us . . . Last time I redid a tub surround we got them through the local tile supply but we lived out east in a much bigger town in an urban area . . .

I would be happy to deal with some company online but would need help from the customer service with a real person who works with the actual product and knows the ins and outs of the merchandise.

Hubs pried out one tile. It's marked with an "Incepa" label and says "Made in Brazil." It's also thinner than the ubiquitous white tile they had at Home Depot.
