Comments (22)wolfgang80: I've considered (and in all honesty am still considering) soapstone, but my biggest worry is that I won't handle the chips and water marks well. We definitely want something that's low maintenance and not damaged very easily (as the DH does most of the cooking and isn't exactly careful or gentle in the kitchen). Do you think the soapstone would be much more period appropriate and/or a better fit overall?...See MoreBarocca soapstone looks like Ray Liotta after 2 hours. What else?
Comments (121)Marcolo, this isn't necessarily for you, but for someone who might be considering linoleum type counters in the future. When we were first married, we lived in an old farmhouse that had red lino floors, and red lino counters, perfect U shape postwar remodel, sigh. (It looked like they used the cutout of the floor to do the counters!) I don't know if the problems came with the age of the lino, or what, but every time I tried to lift something warm up off the counter, it would stick fast. So, things like a bowl of soup or a bowl of oatmeal would stick. When I'd finally pry the bowl up, a small chunk of linoleum would be stuck to the bottom of the bowl. Yuck! We were very happy when we could replace those counters with some laminate. I hope you find that durable finish you are after. Have to wonder if hard wood countertops might be a good option. I think they'd still give you somegrounding with the colors you are considering. This kitchen is especially bright, is it grounded enough?...See MoreLaminates that look like soapstone or similar... greenish black?
Comments (3)I really like Janie K's Wilsonart Oiled Soapstone, and I'm considering doing Wilsonart Pearl Soapstone (gray) in my kitchen. Formica Basalt Slate is an another option which has been used on GW. Out of the dark samples I brought home, the only blackish/greenish ones are more granite-y: Wilsonart Bella Venito and Ebony Eclipse. Wilsonart Rustic Slate has some interesting color variations, though not necessarily greenish. An interesting new color is Wilsonart Black Alicante, and Formica Mineral Olivine and Soapstone Sequoia might be worth a look in person....See MoreQuartz that looks like soapstone?
Comments (6)When we thought we couldn't find a fabricator for the soapstone we loved we almost went with honed Raven. Not that it looked particularly like soapstone but it was dark and the honed wasn't shiny. But the honed Raven sample seemed like it might stain with oil and it certainly showed fingerprints. In the end we found a fabricator and installed soapstone. Two and a half years later I still love it. In my opinion, it's more practical than quartz. Sure I could scratch it but the scratches buff out with a green scrubby pad (we have a hard variety -- Beleza). And we do have few small chips around the sink edge but I'm not sure that wouldn't have happened anyway with quartz (the quartz tops in the showroom we visited were certainly chipped along the edge). And our counters simply don't stain and don't show fingerprints. We never oil (ours is naturally dark) and they do show oil spots, which are easily wiped away. And I can set any hot thing down on them with impunity. All that said, I was quite taken with the Raven C'stone. It's just not soapstone....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
