Paint and curb appeal Split Level Home
Comments (5)teacats has lots of good suggestions. As splits go, yours is pretty nice. I dug around a bit and found this link for a small book on ideas for splits. I had thought of some kind of trellis to unify the front. Indeed, that is one of the suggestions in the booklet. So, maybe there isn't money to change rooflines, etc. But of you see something you like, you could start working in that direction with landscaping (hardscapes in particular) or color. Btw, I have always thought that splits are a very practical way to live. Easier for older folks and younger too, where steps can be a barrier. A nice way to "stay connected" to family. You're never too far away. My split plan rancher has a feeling of real disconnectedness. But since DD is almost 14, maybe that's good! ;-) Oh, there is another split transformation on the Cottage Living website, but it involved a huge budget. The house is totally re-made. It is amazing. Comments (17)You have a lovely home! I agree that the tree is planted much too close to the front of your home. Also consider raising the canopy of the huge tree in front. Bring out an arborist for the best results. I like K Laurence's idea of using Rejuvenation.com for your mailboxes, lighting and house numbers. Put in a larger welcome mat, at least the size of the door opening. Consider putting in a small, round freestanding type flagstone (or some other flat stone or brick) patio for the two chairs. You have such a beautiful lush, green yard. Having a small round patio would be a nice touch IMO....See MoreNeed help with curb appeal for my new home
Comments (14)Not sure how much you want to spend on this but if you are re teracing the yard and stairs, consider curving or angling them toward the driveway. it would add convenience and visual interest. I would cover the cinderblock wall with a stone veneer or a faux stone paint job and let vines grow all down it. You could even add cast stone tracery and grow ivy over the wall to fake castle walls or paint a mural :-) For safety I would keep the lampoles (sprayed hammer black metal ) or replace with lights on the stair walls to illuminate the steps. I would also spray the stair rail black and maybe add black shutters a classic red brick, white trim and black shutters. Then a couple black urns with bright flowers could flank entry steps. (Those Rustoleum textured metal spray paints work magic on cheap plastic pots as well as metal light fixtures) If you want a awning or a small gable over the front door add post to stair rails to support a metal roof. You have a nice house with intersting design challenges just clean and add some colorful plants while you plan any big structural changes to the wall....See MoreImprove Curb Appeal of My Existing Home
Comments (12)Brick: I think your brick is very attractive; I would not paint it. I do think the railing would look better if painted black or dark green. Landscape: Your pictures are very dark--is that a Japanese maple in the front of the house in the flower bed? Those shrubs might look better if they were shaped. Flowering shrubs and annuals would be an improvement, too. Not the time of year, I know. Paging Dig Doug's Designs! He has terrific ideas. I am not sure how much room you have on the right side, but I think an arbor would look really nice over there or in the front of your house with some climbing roses or other vines like clematis. Windows: I am not a professional, but I think your mini blinds do not go with the style of your home. Sheers or lace curtains would seem to look better. If you can't open your windows because they are nailed shut, it's time to think about new windows. I know you hate your brick and think your house is unattractive, but I don't think it looks that bad. This is the time of year when flowers fade and leaves fall. In my area, it seems cloudy and/or rainy/snowy all the time. Can't wait to see what you do with the place. Good luck!...See MoreJeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor
