Flooring for basement-Laminate vs Marmoleum?
Comments (2)I am trying to decide on the same issue. We have carpet in most of our basement. One area I want to put down a type of floor that will be good for a playroom for the kids. An area where they can paint, draw, and keep their toys. When I have family gatherings this area will serve as extra seating for eating. I want it to look nice, not cold on the kiddos feet, easy to clean, and durable. That's not too much to ask. LOL. My flooring guy suggested duraceramic becasue it is not as cold or hard as tile. Any suggestion on what type of flooring would be best? or any opinions on duraceramic?...See Morestill agonizing on marmoleum color choices
Comments (5)We have Click under our cabinets--oh well! From what I can tell, the reasons not to do it are that it prevents it from expanding and contracting and it prevents you from getting the floor up later. The latter doesn't really worry me since either way we would have put the cabinets up on some substrate that was the same height as the floor, and the most likely future for our floor is that someone will take out the linoleum and refinish the wood underneath, in which case they'll have to muck with the cabinet toekicks anyway. I don't know what to make of the first issue, though. We left "breathing room" around the edges of the room in all cases per the installation instructions, but it's covered everywhere---by moulding in some places and by the cabinets in others. If it moves, it will probably be bad across the board (though I guess with the cabinets, it could potentially damage the counter? But even that is just sitting on the cabinets, not attached physically anywhere except with caulk---so in theory it should move with the cabinets). Who knows. I guess we'll see! On colors, we have three grays--eternity, silver shadow, and volcanic ash. The only one we really have issues with is volcanic ash, which shows scratches more than the other two. (Scratches are from appliances not being moved carefully enough, so that may or may not be a general issue, but I *think* they scratched across more than just the dark tiles, but only the dark ones show the scratches. Maybe we just had bad luck and only hit those two tiles, though!) Our neighbor has the sheet in one of the gold/orangey colors, and that seems to hide everything....See MoreMarmoleum click installation
Comments (6)What colors did you get? I *love* my Marmoleum click floor in kitchen/dining area but we did not get a good installation. Also ordered from Green Building Supply and was going to DIY with the help of a handywoman. Long story, blah blah blah, subfloor had more issues than in my skill set so we hired company recommended by designer who was supposed to be experienced in Marmoleum. Turns out they were assuming it would be the same as vinyl click products and did a lot more of banging the pieces together than how you supposed to get just the right angle with the Marm and gently put them together. Their floor leveling plan was also not good so now we have areas where the squares/planks do not come together as tightly as they are supposed to and the company backpedaled on trying to fix it and instead refunded almost all of our install $$. I'd rather have my beautiful floor done right!! My recommendation is to keep looking for someone with Marmoleum experience. Or, if that's not possible, someone who will watch the video, read the instructions and practice a few rows to make sure they can get those subsequent rows to go in cleanly. Side to side is super easy so don't judge by that....See MoreClick flooring NOT the woodgrain look?
Comments (13)For anyone else looking for waterproof luxury vinyl tile that does not look like wood OR stone, OR concrete, there are some. I have been searching for days. I HAVE existing wood-look Vinyl plank on my first floor, and wanted to extend it into more rooms to replace worn carpeting and guess what? Shaw doesn't make the flooring anymore, even though it's 4 years old. SO- What do we all do when we CANNOT match the existing flooring?? I tried to find a "near match" and partially installed it-it LOOKS AWFUL. DO NOT try to do MORE wood look nearby prior wood look planks. It doesn't work, TRUST ME. What you DO IS- use NON wood -look flooring for the rest of the space, something totally different that isn't trying to match. (Duh. I don't know why I didn't think of this) Go for stone look, or even concrete look, or, if you don't want those-go for the very few vinyl tiles that are fabric look or patterns. I was doing a bedroom, so I worried that a stone-look bedroom floor would be weird. First of all, most tile PLANK looks like wood. The non-wood types are usually vinyl TILE not planks. I did not know that when I started. The vinyl tiles have all the same properties as the planks. I had to really hunt for them. The frustrating part is that there is NO GOOD WAY to search for them. Websites will sometimes let you filter for "stone look" or "concrete look"--but what if you want "Neither"? There are no search criteria. So I wound up spending hours just visually searching through websites. I am sharing my results here to save some of you time. Loew's actually has several in their "Fabcore" line. This one is a woven type look. They have several colors and styles. Personally, I stopped making purchases at Loews for several years due to what I felt were quality issues, but this new line of tile is actually well reviewed. Lucida USA Appalachian Weave 12-in x 24-in Waterproof Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring (36-sq ft/case) Also Loew's smartcore has some patterns: SMARTCORE Paramount 12-in x 24-in Waterproof Interlocking Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring (15.83-sq ft/case) Also, Home Depot has a few in the "Lifeproof" line. Lifeproof 16 in. W Brushed White Click Lock Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring (24.89 sq. ft./case) The brushed white isn't white though, it's a bit purple. I could not make that color work. Home Depot also has some luxury tile PLANK in a similar color with more pattern: Lifeproof 8.7 in. W Colorado Click Lock Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring (20.06 sq. ft./case) It also has the purple overtone. But it is one of the few planks ( not tile) that isn't wood look. If you care about planks vs tile. Floor and Decor has a few that look like porcelain tile a bit: WHITE VEIN CUT TRAVERTINE RIGID CORE LUXURY VINYL TILE - FOAM BACK It's supposed to look like travetine, but I think the pattern is subtle enough to just look like simple tile (?) I finally went with: Home Depot: Ivy Hill Tile Slate Light Gray 12 in. x 24 in. Waterproof Rigid Core Click-Lock Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring (28.04 sq. ft. / case) It is such a subtle pattern grey that it looks like porcelain tile. I hope this helps any of you trying to match existing wood-llike vinyl floors. Don't match them! go with something different....See Morejag1929
