Do these drapes go? Are there drapery rules?
Comments (31)prairiegirlz5: budge1 was considering the Silk Taffeta drapes which are a shinier silk and give a more formal look. The Thai Silk, also by RH, comes in the same colors and on their website it does look like the same stuff. So basically, whatever color she likes, she could get in either style. But, in person, they do look different as the Thai silk has less sheen and is more nubby--why it's so important to look at these drapes IRL. Budge1, are you near a RH? At the RH where I live, they have panels up of the majority (not all) of the drapes which you have been looking at. There are differences not only in terms of the sheen, but with the fullness as well--some are interlined others only one lining. If you get any type of stripe, they show differently depending on the pleat/rod style you choose. With stripes in the pleated styles one of the colors would be much more apparant than the other....See MorePlease help with 'flat panel' drape
Comments (5)There are many types of pinch pleats, from barrel pleats to 5 finger pleats. Did this curtain have any pleat at all or was it just a flat panel. If you haven't sewed drapes before, there is drapery tape you can buy that lets you pull strings to pleat it in the style you want. Have a look at the link below. I've never used this link and there are other sites that sell it too as well as fabric stores.Other sites may have different configurations of pleats too. The tape is a fairly stiff acrylic webbing and will give body to the drapery top. I suggest you use a full length hook--from the pocket in the tape to the top of the drape--to keep the top from dipping forward. If you don't want to use the tape then there are instructional videos on line on making drapes. Here is a link that might be useful: Drapery tape...See MoreTo drape or not to drape.
Comments (21)Oh yes, I absolutely would call it a trend to leave windows undressed. I would say that a generation ago, the only reason you would have a window with nothing on it at all would be because you could not afford it. Today, many people choose to keep their windows bare. For at least the last ten years it has been a common look in shelter mags, on TV shows, blogs, etc. Yes, for some people they serve a function, but for many people WT are only or primarily decorative (like Annie's above). I recall learning this lesson when an installer stapled WT to a window, to get just the right look (without asking first BTW). My epiphany in re WT came with one of the first rooms we had painted when we bought our first house. When the prep guys took down the WT, the room was 10x lighter. If I don't need privacy, I opt for light. I personally don't care for WT that do not function (ie valances only above the window itself, or drapes too narrow to close) but I have used them in a few cases just for décor. Overall, I like not having to spend big bucks on WT. The few places where I have used them in my primary home, I regret....See MoreAttaching a Drapery Wand to Grommet Drapery
Comments (4)While they do sell a grommet just for this, if you don't have it, I would sew a ring behind the fabric, between the last two grommets near the lead edge and hang it from the ring. You could also use a drapery rod ring and hang it on the rod between those grommets and hang it from there, again on the back side. You don't want the wand to be on the room side....See MoreLinda Foley
