There is no reason that you can’t have what you want. I mean yes, you don’t want your kitchen in the mountains to look like a TriBeCa loft, but you absolutely can have a white kitchen in a mountain house. Do what makes YOU happy. If you don’t like dark cabinets, why convince yourself and your husband otherwise. Get what you want.

I agree, white kitchen is fine in the mountains. But there are also a lot of colors between white and dark. With all of that wood, I would do painted cabinets. 2 tone would be too much. Just because you have lots of wood and are in the mountains, you don't have to do a mountain rustic kitchen :)

It looks like your flooring runs through other rooms so I'm not sure I'd change it in the kitchen. If you choose lighter painted cabinets the floor will provide nice contrast. I agree with others that I would probably go with painted cabs in your case given the pine ceilings. Warm white would be lovely and not out of place in your home as long as you pick a cabinet style that works with some of the more rustic elements. A darker color on the island could be nice as well (you could even do black!). You might also consider a darker countertop (like soapstone).

If you are going to fully replace the cabinets, I would take the opportunity to improve the layout and get the cooktop off the island and the sink out of the corner. If you post a floorplan with measurements here, you'll get excellent suggestions.

What about green or blue? Why are you so set on white backsplash and cabinets? I’m not saying they’re bad to go with, just curious why you are set on those 2 things since they kind of come after you’ve selected your cabinets...

I just feel like they are timeless which is what I’m going for. I could certainly mix it up. Floors are going on the entire lower level. I don’t mind the corner sink - where would you put it instead? The stovetop i would prefer to be moved so i could do a less bulky island

Hard to tell where the sink could go because I can't see your entire kitchen in your photos, but it looks like it could go on the window wall or perhaps on the island, depending on where everything else ends up. Measured floorplan is required.

You mentioned that you are planning to replace the floors throughout the entire lower level - what will you be replacing with? Or are you just going to refinish the existing wood? What color?

I personally would do similar cabinets -- they fit the space beautifully. You can get your lightness from different countertops and backsplash.

we are thinking engineered hardwood, which is what the current ones are. I would like to do a lighter more muted hardwood (like natural elm or light oak color)

I don't like white cabinets with the pine. I live in a log cabin so lots of pine around. I have been through other mountain type houses which have the knotty pine with white cabinets and it feels off to me. Just my opinion.

Since the floors will affect the entire first floor, I would nail down that color/material first, then look to the kitchen cabinet decision. Then counters, and finally backsplash and paint.

floor in a vinyl plank or vinyl squares : either a slight grayed out shade of medium brown or an actual vinyl square to resemble slate. Decide on floor first. I'd probably get a stained hickory island ...dark enough so the light/dark is not accentuated but a contrasting grain to the pine shows through a bit for some interest and variety. then a painted shade for perimeter which can be almost anything. Can you edit the cabinetry: maybe a little less around the perimeter so you can grow the island. Looks like 3 walls around the perimeter full of cabinets. Remember drawers will be efficient. A sketch of the wall dimensions will assist in a general idea of a plan and where to put emphasis on picking colors/stains/species/etc. this kitchen actually looks tucked off to the side....is it on view...or not so much really???

it is on view. but yes cabinets line three walls of the kitchen except for the area near the window. wall stoves are on the right side. the island is already huge so I will probably leave it similar dimensions but I would like to move the stove from the island. Is there anything that is nice to have on the island that I should consider? also what would you put in place of cabinets? floating shelves? I was thinking about building a "pantry" on the left side since I don't really have one

Vertical pantry cabinets can fill the need rather than building a pantry . your layout can be worked on and options like that Sorted through. Seems like glass doors in at least some uppers would be fabulous . showing Off pottery is a warm wonderful thing especially in your setting. Small sink on island. Usually an inventory is done to accurately assess needs: tableware /pots etc baking equip/ holiday and entertainment ware/ food storage needs. You have abundant inches and newer roll outs either pantry style or drawers will hold things more efficiently so maybe a coffee station and the glass doored area could be worked in .

@Heather HM, that photo is very helpful. Without a floorplan I'm not sure if you have enough room to do what I'm inclined to suggest, but I would think about moving your fridge over to the opposite wall of the U, on the end of the run. Then place your DW next to it, followed by your sink. Square off the corner, then put the range where the microwave is currently (or possibly a little farther down that wall to give yourself maximum space between sink and cooktop). Use the current fridge space for pantry storage, wine fridge, etc. and/or swap the location of the wall ovens if you prefer.

If there isn't enough room on that side to fit sink, DW and fridge, you could consider putting the sink in the island or even keeping it in the corner (I would still move the DW to the other side of the sink, where your wine fridge is now, to get it out of the zone between sink and cooktop). Angled sinks are big space hogs but it looks like your kitchen is fairly large, and with the window configuration I can see how an angled sink might be desirable.

Thank you for your input!! I have never redone a kitchen so it didn’t occur to me to change anything. I think i will definitely move the stove so i can have a hood and possibly put a sink on the island. It would make sense to move the dishwasher if I’m moving the stove.

Agree it’s a lot of wood! Maybe perimeter cabinets in a cream and wood for island?
