White-edged Swedish Ivy? Leaves yellowing?

Hello everyone,

I just bought an adorable Swedish Ivy today, and as soon as I got home I noticed the leaves were going yellow! Not that bad, but I have some gorgeous fully white leaves that I dont want going yellow.

Anyone know how I can fix the yellow leaves?

Also, do you think I can keep the Swedish Ivy indoors with unnatural light?

Yet another question: is it okay if my cat eats it?

(sorry its blurry. Can you see the yellowing leaves, and should I be worried about that?)

You can’t fix the yellow leaves. They’re dying, either prematurely or in their natural time. You can only slow down more going yellow. But no leaf lasts for ever. The pot is small for that amount of foliage. This plant has the potential to grow much larger. I’d repot and, if indoors, put it in a position with as much bright light as possible. Without knowing your location we can’t say if it can be kept outside. But if it can it would be happier than indoors. For further information research Plectranthus madagascariensis ‘Variegatus’ rather than Swedish Ivy. The latter is a common name applied to several different plants.

your plant is stressed ... you bought it today ... and brought it home ...

i suspect what you see at home is different than the store.. due to the type of light it is/was observed in ... frankly.. i dont see any yellow leaves in this pic.. ergo .... if there are any.. it must be minor ..

but lets be clear ... nothing happens in one day ... so i suspect it was previously stressed... either at the grower.. or the shipping to seller.. etc ... if it were grown in a greenhouse ... simply being moved from that perfect environment.. to a store.. is enough to cause minor issues ....

just give it time to settle down.. its stressed.. not hungry.. fert is not a response ... water properly.. and give it a month or two to settle down ... and adjust to the light in your home ...

i would not repot a stressed plant.. until i was sure its no longer stressed ... why add stress on top of stress ...

BTW ... all white leaves are usually terminal ... with no chlorophyll .. they are of no use to the plant.. so the plant doesnt hang on to them very long .... so dont get too attached to them.. and hope you will get repeated shows relating to such ... and they will sunburn or scorch very fast in light that is too intense ...

i see the cat is already eyeing it up ... put it where the cat cant get at it ... and avoid the issue completely ...

You might want to check the Houseplant forum for more and better responses. I also have one of these and had it rooting in water for who knows how long, to the point where the leaves were not only yellow, but were turning pink-white. LOL I finally got around to potting it in some Promix soil, and it finally got darker green. I have it sitting under my 200W table lamp. They seem to need ALOT of direct artificial or alot of indirect (filtered, eg., behind sheer curtains) sun... at least from what I've observed from people growing them in hanging baskets for years. Some people have been able acclimatize theirs to more direct sun in a window. Also, they seem to like to have their soil dry a bit before watering again. I think keeping the soil too moist can mean stem rot (since the stems are so fleshy). Too dry and they really droop.

Advice - itsa mite magnet, so watch for that particular pest. It looks like there probably was some overexposure to the sun (the white on the leaves). Keep it in a fairly cool spot (60-65*). Use a soil that allows you to water copiously to flush the soil and then let it get fairly, but not completely dry before watering again. If you water that way, fertilize every 2 weeks with about a 1/4 recommended dose of a 3:1:2 ratio soluble fertilizer for the winter, then go to a 1/2 dose when you move the plant outdoors into shade, where it will be much happier. i doubt cold has anything to do with it.. you would have to get down into the 30s ... imo ... its stressed from the transplant ... one thing that usually happens with such stress.. is loss of older leaves.. and looking at yours.. it appears to all be older leaves.. the growth tips tips look fine ... water when a plant needs water.. and apparently your plant lets you know.. lol ... one thing i would do ... is google propagation of [latin name] .... and if you can root some new smaller more vigorous babes... i would eventually get rid of this old thing ... sooner or later.. old plants just get too problematic ... e.g... if thats the new pot.. that wasnt much of an up pot for that sized plant ... and you are going to be doing it again soon ... sooo.. if you can get a new one going .. what the heck ... keep in mind.. a clone.. or rooting of this specific plant.. is still the same plant.. if there is some sentimental attachment to such ... ken ps: also.. note where you removed the old leaves.. the buds there .... are already triggered ... and this thing is just going to get bigger ... that also indicates to me.. without researching it.. that this plant would easily root .... you can cut off the end.. and those buds.. will take its place ....

one of you says keep watering.. the other says not to ... lol ... insert finger in pot.. and find out when they need water ... do not overwater .... and presuming your pot has a drain hole.. its probably not an issue ... do let the pot dry out a bit.. before you water again ... since they dont have a great root mass ... you do need to provide enough water ... without loving them to death with too much water ... if you placed them in a baggie.. open at the top.. it might help create a zone iof higher humidity ... which might help ... i see now.. you did that.. good ... done if you can post a pic.. that might help also ... what do you mean.. yours are soft and lilty ??? there is no reason to start over.. with rooting hormones ... ken

Repotting it doesn't need to stress it. There’s no need to bare root or disturb the roots. Just give it a slighter larger pot and fill in the space around the rootball. They’re also very easy to propagate from cuttings If you want more.
