What type of wood cabinet for mid century kitchen?
Comments (17)Oak is an appropriate choice. I’m doing a MCM kitchen where she chose sapele, because it looks a lot like the mahogany that was used a lot in the era. That is in the final selections stage. Heres an original MCM oak kitchen that they updated to a dark cherry. I love bed the originals! I think a classic quarter sawn cherry could work as well. They preferred the dark. Here's one I designed using the cherry, to match the original cherry buffet that was still in the dining room. The kitchen had been ruined by a fire, and someone painting cheap flat white paint all over everything. Yes, that's a 14 foot island taking over the breakfast area too. And, for something completely different. I'm doing a project where vintage metal cabinets are being sandblasted and powder coated turquoise. Color matching range. White Corian counters, checkerboard floors. And the original wood trim, and a new wood ceiling to match. That might be more vintage to you than MCM, but it's still a good look....See More1960 Mid century brick ranch
Comments (53)Thanks guys! I enjoy reading updates, so I had to do my own. :) I must have been dead to think this was an ugly stone wall! I absolutely LOVE IT! What a dang fool I was! Ugh! We are loving the look! We have purchased 9 metal frames. We plan on selecting 9 of our favs and making gallery above the little table in the entryway. We ordered our new storm windows this week. We went with sandstone ProVia storms. That color will be like the mortar in between the brick. Come spring we will get a new (black) charcoal roof, paint the gables, gutters and downspouts in sandstone as well....See Moreinterior paint color for mid century modern home?
Comments (10)If you can remove the popcorn ceiling, it will make the ceilings look cleaner and newer. Since you have children, you need to be careful to not generate dust, to keep them from developing allergies or asthma. https://www.google.com/amp/s/pulse.seattlechildrens.org/the-dangers-of-home-renovation-keep-kids-safe-during-repairs/amp/ Caution: some popcorns ceilings contained asbestos. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.asbestos.com/blog/2018/07/24/asbestos-popcorn-ceiling-safe/amp/ The walls will have a better finish if you remove the wallpaper, scrub the walls to remove the adhesive (a wet roller mop works wonders) and then spray new texture to cover over where the adhesive was removed. Prime the walls and paint them in white flat paint. Then, using the same shade of white in a semi-gloss finish, put an extra coat of white on the woodwork (baseboards and doors). The screen between the dining room and hallway is non-structural. You can remove it but would have to patch the floor, ceiling and connection at the sidewall. Do everything white. If you don’t like the hallway, you can always find a way to rework it later with doors or cabinets. Sherwin Williams has 50 shades of white. You should be able to find a shade of white that is perfect for your home. They have a lightbox in the store that enables you to see the paint colors under different lighting conditions. Right now, they are having a 30% off sale: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/special-offers/digital-media...See MoreWhat color should we paint our mid century fireplace?
Comments (29)In general, you will not go wrong in trying to work with the original design intent of the house. I would probably clean the stone and reevaluate. Since you appear to be changing flooring you could try to find something you like that works With it instead of Against it. Right now it seems as if it is in keeping with the architecture of the house and with the built-ins that you are preserving. There are probably a bunch of different ways to make it look better and updated if you were looking at it in isolation, but it still has to work in the context of the house itself--and I think you could easily fall into doing something too 2020s contemporary to it, which will then not look good with the other bits of character you are keeping....See Morebtydrvn
