Help With Furniture Placement?

Me and my boyfriend are moving into our new home within the next few weeks, and we are unsure of where our furniture should be placed. We are planning to get/place in the combined space: A couch, accent chair, coffee table (long rectangular or round), small decorative wooden chair (to place our handmade quilt on), a medium sized TV and a console stand, a small square dining table and two chairs, and an area rug. The kitchen also includes a moveable island on wheels that we will place parallel to the oven a few feet away.

I am really unsure of how to utilize the space, as I believe the tv and stand should go centered on the biggest wall (the wall across from the front door) with the couch in front of it with the accent chair on the left side, but my boyfriend says the tv should go on the wall across from the dining room that the front door opens towards. But what would I do about the big empty wall towards the hallway? Would the door opening to the tv be problematic? I thought about using that smaller wall instead for an entryway, because the wall with the window is too small for one...I also don't know where or what kind of table to place in the dining area because the space is really small and the window isn't centered neither is the light for the kitchen.

Any suggestions on the placement of our furniture is much appreciated. I am not good at visualizing layouts without seeing them. Any suggestions for furniture pieces, alternative placements, or decor ideas (midcentury modern) would be very much appreciated. We are wanting a retro feel with light woods and white too. Also, any tips on how to lighten up the space because the walls are the wrong color (too dark) would be much appreciated.

So here’s what I came up with. Ignore the door swinging the wrong direction. My program does it’s own thing lol. Consider not having a separate dining area and get an island that has an extendable table. The big blank wall could be bookcases, a mural (my pick) or large canvas art. Definitely have more recessed lighting installed and put them on dimmer switches.

I really appreciate your input! I never thought of the bookcase for that large wall. I also love that lamp!

My kitchen does come with a moveable island, (the size of one standard cabinet) and not large enough for two barstools. So that's why I considered a separate dining area for those.

Also I should've mentioned, for now we are renting the space, so we aren't able to make a large amount of changes to the home so that's why I was looking for alternatives for the lighting issue

And just to ask, because I'm not good at design and want to learn more, the door opening to the console and the tv isn't an issue design-wise? Like it doesn't disrupt the flow of the room? Is it wrong to have the back of the couch face the door or is that personal preference?

DRAW the entire room to scale at 1/4 inch to one inch. Add the windows, openings et. Put inches to all of everything. : ) You don't need a "program". A 25 foot tape measure, graph paper and a pencil and a friend..........works just fine. Get busy or no help of a worthwhile nature will be forthcoming.

What a lovely, bright room with so much potential! IMO, if you can find another location for the "gaming" do it :-) Given your sightlines I'd absolutely focus furniture layout around the fireplace. Here's what I'd do: Float a 3 seater sofa to the L of the fireplace, centred in the room. Small side table for a reading lamp on the L (nothing on the R arm side). Behind it place a console table for plants to take advantage of the lovely large window (if you need to add lighting, place it on the right side of table with cord running to the left), coffee table in front of sofa. To the R of the fireplace, a small side table and an arm chair angled out, in the space between the 2 doorways, another arm chair facing the fireplace with a small side table & lamp (play with which side works best for flow into the room from front door). One seating area focused on fireplace. Moving to the wall with 2 windows: create another seating/conversation area with a chair in front of each window and a low table in between - angle the chairs slightly towards each other. The chair in between the doorways "links" the 2 conversation areas. Use a large area rug to define the fireplace conversation area (at a minimum, front legs of sofa, of chair in between doorways, and chair to R of fireplace should be on the rug, no rug for the seating area in front of the two windows). The way the furniture is pictured creates a box that impedes traffic flow. Put a sofa against the window on the left wall. Then two chairs perpendicular to each other on the corner where the 7 A-7 circle is on the drawing. The dimensions shown aren't sufficient for me to be able to tell you how large the sofa can be, but get something small so that you have room for at least one end table in the corner. You should have room for some type of coffee table as well. If he needs a TV, hang it on the wall next to the window that is next to the door on the right wall. Make sure not to hang it too high - this is a common error.

No it’s not wrong, it’s more a design concept that you don’t “walk” into the back of a sofa when entering a room. It can feel can feel like you are blocking the room off. I did the layout the other way so you can see what that looks like. For lighting, I can only come up with a wall light that attaches to the wall and plugs in to an outlet. You can get wall-mounted cord covers that attach to wall with screws vs peel and stick so you can remove when you are finished renting. They can also be painted with the wall color so the blend in.

It’s just a design concept to not walk into the back of a sofa when you enter a room. It just visually blocks the room. So I re-did the layout so you could see that. I recommend getting simple bar height table with 4 legs that could double as your island. Then you can have simple bars stools that you can tuck underneath when you are working in the kitchen. Look for wall sconce lights that plug into an outlet. You may want to get cord covers that screw into the wall vs. the peel and stick kind so there is no damage to the walls. The cover can also be painted to match the walls so the light looks hard-wired.

Now I see how your original idea works better. I didn't realize how closed off the room looks my way. I also appreciate the lighting ideas, that is something I need to purchase. Thank you again for all of the advice and tips. You helped tremendously!
