Exterior advice for 80s contemporary
Looking for advice for our home, which is currently confused on style and I want to change everything... except the brick which I’ve promised my husband can stay as-is. (I‘d paint it but I will survive.) Looking to bring it back to more of a modern design, keeping colors natural and likely something in a grey tone with either darker accents or white even. Love the look of cedar accents but don’t know how to tie those in. Basically what I’m saying is: get rid of the traditional door, brown paint, and bring this 80s house into modern 2021.
First priority is new windows. I’ve wavered between black or white but think I will likely get white because I fear the black window trend will wane and I will then hate them. The plantation shutters inside can go too. They’re old and don’t work well.
Then, new front door, getting rid of T111 for Hardie board (maybe board and batten) below windows, and painting everything.
Finally, the last thing will be a new roof and I’m leaning toward a dark metal one but can be persuaded otherwise.

Comments (27)I also found another project I did, where they used wood for the decking, and top railing cap with feeney cable rail as well. White timber tech post sleeves. I made a pergola to go over the deck and they bought one of these really cool colored sunsail awning to go onto. Like someone else mentioned the side stairs could be better with divided landings, and wider. As far as the siding I know its very expensive but hardy plank would last the longest with minimal maintenance. I also think that if something was done with bottom of deck, either columns, enclosed porch with deck underneath would change the whole appearance of the house, along with different rails....See More80s Contemporary Exterior Paint Advice Needed
Comments (16)My neighbors have a house they painted charcoal. They have tried a number of different front door colors - pale yellow (definitely not a good choice), turquoise (not my taste, but it wasn’t a painful mismatch). My favorite was a dark red that leaned toward orange rather than blue on the color spectrum. It popped and picked up some of the colors in their brick chimney. Perhaps that would work for you. Currently, their door is a paler shade of the charcoal, which makes the house seem very monotone. Comments (9)A shed dormer over the garage might be an option, but in general, it's not a good idea to add things like that for just looks. What's on the second floor? Would a shed dormer add light to any room up there? The garage door is a big, white blank. A garage door with some windows in a color that is less stark might help.
