Comments (6)While there, I spent several hours with Jack in 45* temps and horizontal rain. We talked about the collection & each tree's (all of those pictured above and a few more) history at length, and then went to look at the 30-40 trees that were in the collection, but usually out of the public's view. We then went to his home & spent a considerable amount of time reviewing his trees and looking at his indoor set-up where he grows MANY temperate trees you're not supposed to be able to grow indoors. We toured the grounds with the guy from DC in a covered 'limousine' golf cart with side curtains. Everyone was really hurried about their business because there was a sense of urgency to get out of the rain, so I never got the chance to ask the question. I asked Jack, but I didn't get anything definitive from him. I haven't forgotten about it though. I had composed a letter/message yesterday articulating the question in such a way that I would get a technical answer, but as I was correcting the message I hit a 'wrong key' and lost the whole thing. Frustrated, I abandoned the idea for the day. ;o) More when I DO find something out. Al...See MoreThought you might like to see this garden..
Comments (15)Nothing growing... Except the neighbor's discontent. I'd have to agree, though; there are likely neighbors of mine that wonder just what the heck my wide assortment of plastic trash I keep peeking into might be! I live in an area where xeriscaping is popular, and there is a house on the corner that is our "landmark" when giving people directions: "Go until you see the yard that isn't a yard, yes the one with the headboard and neon-painted adirondack chairs in the middle of a bunch of weedy-looking things, turn right..." I frequently have to remind myself that it takes all kinds to make the world go round. For the record, if this yard were in my town, the yard-police would be out and the offending "trash" would have to be removed. There was a big stink in the paper last year about people with three or more offenses to the town's code (weeds, peeling paint, falling fence, trash, dead trees, etc.), would be fined. I guess someone got sick of the neighbors dandelions seeding their yard! I guess there IS an advantage to stuffed animals!?!...See MoreScience news - might be of interest to gardeners
Comments (5)PJ and Jacquelyn, many of the thoughts you have expressed occur to me too. I really posted the article only because it had fresh science findings in it, at least, findings I had not read anywhere else before. I have become a little burned out about the seemingly incessant and obsessive weaving of every scientific finding about meteorology into the getting to be suffocating fabric of global warming thoughts. I think we're all gonna die from the energy wasted on re-discovering over and over what we cannot control, before we die from the uncontrollable itself. The clincher for me was a few months back, when I read (or saw on TV) a report about some current in the Atlantic Ocean. Supposedly, if that current changes in some way, the planet could be in for another Ice Age. Fear of that change in that current is driven by observations that are interpreted to conclusions that - guess what? - global warming is what's changing the current. Get it? No matter what happens to the planet's climate - even an Ice Age - it's because of global warming. It's like, if you want to be Chicken Little about global warming, the deck is stacked; you can't go wrong. Then the blame game and the my science is more solid than your science food fights get going. Then the policy wonks, with all their science-backed, correct prescriptions for all the drastic behavioral changes that humans - especially Americans - "should" be making, that lead to all the unintended consequences that no scientists can foresee (because they could not possibly gather enough data), out-shout everyone in every discussion until you pray that some heat wave or Ice Age could just shut them up (or make them keep to themselves) and make them just leave the rest of us be, baked or frozen. I need to go out and run our noisy gasoline-powered mower, before the neighborhood lawn inspectors park their 4-ton SUV out front and idle it for 5 minutes while making notes about how our grass is too tall, for a "nastygram" to be produced using all the kilowatt hours it'll take to get one of those written and mailed to us. I'm not hyperventilating or raving mad, just venting like I need to now and then about life's absurdities. It's probably global warming that's making me short tempered and causing a snowball effect of additional CO2 dumping into the air. I just saw an article today about the unusual snowfall in South Africa...of course we know why that happened! Forget the lawn, it's Margarita Time!...See MoreHey PKguy Saw this and thought of you
