I'm sensitive to lily smell- has anyone heard of this before?
Comments (108)We lived in Georgia when I was eight years old. Had a cool creek that ran through the backyard that my friends and I spent lots of time in, catching crawdads and throwing lily pads at each other. The first week of May I got horribly sick with what the docs guessed was an allergy. I couldn't breathe, even though I've never had asthma. My face turned very red and swelled to the point that I couldn't see. My hands swelled so much that they actually cracked and clear liquid ran from the cracks. It lasted for several days and then disappeared as suddenly as it came on. The following year it was back -- again in the first part of May. It was worse the second time and I ended up in the hospital, on oxygen and being pumped full of antihistamines. After asking tons of questions about anything new in my environment, the doctor finally told my mother that he believed I was deathly allergic to something that only bloomed during that time of year. His suggestion, besides documenting everything that I'd recently come into contact with, was to be GONE from the area well before the following May. Needless to say, we moved up North, and there were no more episodes until I went to an Easter Sunday service where the church was filled with blooming LILIES. The uncontrollable coughing started before we were even seated. Within five minutes I was having trouble breathing and freaking out. Mystery solved. I got out of there like my pants were on fire and my butt was catching! Nowadays I don't go to Easter services, or weddings, or funerals. I steer clear of the floral department in garden centers and grocery stores. No more lilies for me. For the record, I don't think I'm allergic to ALL types of lilies, but I have no plans to test that theory....See Morewet dog smell from newer dishwasher-
Comments (238)What a problem. Lots of opinions and suggestions here but no solution. No mention of contacting dishwasher manufacturers who must surely know about this issue. I contacted Neff in the UK for advice who suggested using a dishwasher cleaner every 30 cycles (every two weeks in or house of two people). Tried that in addition to my 15 min prewash in cold waterand soda crystals, often also with a squirt of bleach, followed by the 1 hr wash at 65C using Fairy Platinum plus (most expensive detergent ever?). Still some odour on wineglasses out of the cupboard next day. What I'm now doing is rinsing the wineglasses just at the end of the wash cycle under the boiling water tap. This works. Would love to hear a proper technical explanation ( and solution) from a scientist at a dishwashr manufacturer, but I won't be holdong my breath....See MoreMiele T9802 Dryer checked out OK with Miele
Comments (22)Besides from the Normal (moisture sensing) cycle not working on a 100% synthetic load of gym clothes....Every other load (shirts, pants, shorts, towels, sheets, table cloths, napkins, jackets, etc...) come out flawlessly using Normal (moisture sensing). Does it annoy me that I have to use 45 Min Warm + gentle to dry synthetics? Yeah, a little. But, I think it is similar to the Miele washing machine quirks...Pre-Wash is labeled Heavy Wash, No soak option, after a cycle is complete, the drum does not tumble to "un-stick" clothes that are literally plastered to the stainless drum after a 1400rpm spin cycle, Cannot activate the drum light during a cycle, etc. etc.. My washer and dryer though, IMO, perform better than ANY OTHER make or model. As we know, or should know!!!, nothing is perfect. If Miele hadn't sent a Technician out, I would be very worried and upset, but since I was with the Tech the entire time during service...everything checked out. If this is a specific "problem/issue" with my T9802...then I'm just gonna have to deal with it, because I love this dryer!!! ;)...See MoreIs anyone happy with their front loader washer and dryer?
Comments (77)With all the opinions, assumed problems, brands, types, and style of washing machines these days, its important to get a perspective of what exactly is being compared. With strict government energy guidelines, manufacturers are forced to comply and reengineer products to meet that criteria. The difficult task is manufacturing a product that still cleans, uses much less water, and promoting it in such a way it still sells. None of this information is new but it goes a long way into understanding what is being compared. Their are distinct categories of washing machines each with specific positives and negatives. Traditional Front Load Washer-Excellent cleaning, Uses plenty of water for effective cleaning , Average Cycle times, Gentle on Clothes, and finished load quality is better and softer. The later is directly related to having sufficient immersion of the load in plenty of water. Water temperatures are not locked down or lowered to meet current standards. Average life span is 10 years or more. HE Front Load Washer-Very Good cleaning, Substandard amount of water used, Long Cycle times, Harder on clothing because of the lack of water and friction of the garments creates lint and pilling issues in some instances. Finish load quality is harsh. (Scratchy towel syndrome) Clothes tend to wear out quicker. Dumbed Down water temps. (Hot is the new warm, warm is cool, and cool is cold) None of the new HE machines that I know of offer a 100% tap Hot fill. Average life span 7 - 10 years. Traditional Top Load Agitator Style-Excellent cleaning. Ridiculous amount of water usage. Short cycle times. Gentler on clothing than HE Top Loader and HE Front Loaders. Excellent lint and pet hair redisposition than all other types of machines. All other machines lack a recirculation water pump and lint filter. Temperatures not dumbed down and limited to Hot water supply temperature. Average life span 15-25 years. HE Top Loader-Below average cleaning. Moderate Cycle times. Tangles and knots clothing. Average amount of water usage but not enough for a vertical axis machine to properly clean. Dumbed Down water temps. Average life span 5-7 years. Build quality in all the new HE machines is virtually identical, neither here nor there. With the exception of Miele and Speed Queen which by far is superior. Unfortunately Speed Queen failed to keep pace with the technology and marketing over the years and are really not in pace with the competition. They are not available in mainstream big box or other retail but through a dealer only arrangement. If it wasn't for their share in coin-op commercial they most likely would have been bought out long ago. They were not mainstream in the 70's, 80's, and later years when top loaders were all the rage, while Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE emerged as the market leaders. Today Samsung, LG have gobbled the market share with Whirlpool and it's acquired sub brands now trying to keep pace. Miele just isn't an option in the U.S. and didn't compete very well when introduced to this market years ago. Lack of service, capacity, and features. They too were dwarfed by the Korean competition. So there's a lot to consider when deciding if you like or dislike your current machine. I liked all my machines, commercial, very old double Dexter wringer, old style top loader, conventional front loader, and yes there are even things I like about my HE front loader. I would like it a lot better if government would QUIT placing ridiculous regulations on laundry equipment. When you have to use a work around to get the appliance to do what it was meant to do, we are moving backwards!...See Moreluna123456
