Dishes smell 'fishy' after dishwasher
Comments (363)I agree that the smelly problem is also connected with the outdoor air; however, I must also add that the problem can't be totally connected to food/enzymes in the detergent because, when we lived in Nashville, TN - we remodeled our main bathroom and put in a nice, new window so we could open it and get some fresh air...we couldn't even open our old one. Once the remodeling was finished, the first time we used our shower and opened the window, the bathroom started smelling like a old FISH - there was no food in our bathroom. So...our assumption after that was the outside air mixing with the WATER was causing this smelly "fish" problem. When we moved to Maryland...we were visiting our son and he gave us some water in glasses...opened his windows and BAM there was the smelly fish problem again when I picked up the glass to take a drink! Our theory is that there is something being added to the whole country's water supply that is causing this problem once the water comes in contact with the outside air. We currently live in a condo where we don't get much outside air because we have a lobby and we don't open our windows....and we are about 90% free of fishy smell!! I say 90% because the other 10% IS fishy smell which only comes when it is extremely WINDY outside which means the air is coming through our windows and the 1 door we have to our patio. Plus, when it is windy, I put a folded up paper towel on top of my glass of water and that keeps the fish smell out of my glass!...See MoreFirst day in new house - dog smell in carpet
Comments (20)I done renovation work in some homes where pets had soiled the carpet. Professional carpet cleaning should help. If the underboards are badly soaked they will have to be treated after the carpets are pulled up. Bleach and water applied with a paint roller works wonders! If cleaning the carpet fails have a look at carpet remnants. While it won't be the perfect kind and color it will be new and clean. If you are careful not to slice off a finger (my dad's advice to me once) it can be cut with a utility knife and simply laid in place. Again not the best installation but fairly inexpensive and much better then living with stinky carpet. Part of the joy of being a homeowner is fixing things. Check out the link to doityourself website! Free articles on everything from wiring to cleaning windows. I had never been taught electrical wiring and that site gave me enough information to be confident that I could do the job the right way. Just becareful as you could become one of the glassy-eyed masses wandering around Home Depot dreaming of the next six things you can do to the homestead. Dolly dog whizzed on my carpet and I noticed it was much worse then any kitty accident. I had to buy my own carpet cleaning machine with special pet odor soap... which has been handy as I stupidly dribble coffee on my carpet fairly often. Just one of those cheapo machines but it is easy and does a fair job... better then I can do with a scrub brush and rags. Alas... I have about 1000 sq.ft. of light blue carpet that is 12 years old. Getting to be time to rip it out and lay some new. : ) lyra Here is a link that might be useful: do it yourself...See MoreOT - How to keep house smelling fresh w/ a dog
Comments (32)Thank you ALL !!! It was so fun to read your posts, I found myself smiling often :-) I will give a few things a try. He goes to the vet this afternoon, so will ask about food and of course be sure there are no health concerns causing the doggy smell. Its not a pungent odor, just dog smell. Like many of you said, we have been without a pet for the nearly 14 yrs we have been married, so its a noticeable change in the air :) To all you Weim owners out there specifically, I welcome ANY and ALL advice! In fact, feel free to email directly at mvandemark001@woh.rr.com since this isn't a pet forum. We didn't take this decision lightly and frankly, came up against some opposition in choosing this breed because of their physical demands. But, we felt all the great benefits of Weims outweighed this potential "con" and we could put the time and training into him to get the great family pet we wanted. He will start puppy kindergarten the first week of Nov (because that's when the next session starts). I work about 6-10 hours a week, and all three kids are in school full time now, so I am confident we have the time to train him. Thank you all, I appreciate it!...See MoreHelp!! Brand New KA Dishwasher Smells Horrible??
Comments (53)@H W, I know. Same. I bought a new Whirlpool dw in 2015. I really liked it, but after about a month, it had the most ghastly stentch that I could not get rid of. Used bleach, more detergent, less detergent, always left the door ajar, did cleaning cycles, ugh. Everything. Then I found a web site that addressed the issue back then. It said to use Borax--about half a cup, in the longest and hottest cycle. (as a dedicated cleaning cycle) I did that a few times and it helped. It was suggested to add a sprinkle of Borax going forward to prevent it coming back. I did that too, and the odor was gone. Last year, I got a new Bosch dw and same. Ugh. This one was a bit more difficult to deal with as it uses less water than the Whirlpool did. However, I kept at it and it's fine now. I have to be careful of the detergent I use in the Bosch as it is fussy, unlike the Whirlpool was. In the Bosch I am using Lemishine dw cleaner monthly, which as far as I can tell is simply citric acid with a lemon scent. I was using the Finish dw cleaner fluid once a month, but I found that hard to obtain after a while. I find the Lemishine cleaner is slightly better. I also add a sprinkle of Lemishine booster (also citric acid, so might be a redundant purchase) to the detergent dispenser a couple times a week. Using this plan along with Finish Quantum detergent pods seems to keep odors away. I also have good luck with Cascade powder dosed at 1 1/2 TBS for my soft water--might have to use a little more with hard water. Hope that helps. ETA, when things were at their worst with the Bosch and the odor changed to general aquarium water scent, I took the advise on some thread on this forum and put copper pieces/fittings, such as from the plumbing section of the hardware store in the dw while running cycles. That put the kabosh on the fish pond scent that was coming up. Gads. Never had these issues back in the older days. Anyways, been there, smelled that and much better now. Take care....See MoreVirginia Knight
