Window in shower help needed

I need to replace a window in a shower to bring it up to safety code and maintain privacy. I have been given a couple of options: 1) replace window with glass blocks, 2) replace current regular glass with tempered and textured safety glass. would appreciate your opinions on these options.

We did tempered obscure glass.

Thank you Deanie Jo. I'm leaning towards the tempered glass option but hubby concerned it's more fragile then glass block should someone slip and fall into the window. The window is 2.5 x 6 ft and is only 12 inches from the shower floor. Did you have similar concern?

You are right, that is the best solution-if you are going to mostly store the shower curtain inside the tub. I'm only going to be using this for an occasional shower at, if at all so the shower curtain will usually be hanging on the outside of the tub. Even I even keep it hanging; I may just have the contractor install the rod and skip the curtain for now. Can anyone who showers with a rain shower help me??? Does the water splash less towards the back wall???

If you don't want the light from the window it might be possible to buy a shower wall panel, depending upon your width, attach that then buy an exposed pipe shower like picture below. It would raise the main attachment to be above the window, with just a small attachment in the middle. If your budget allowed you could get shower panels for the other walls of shower also which would help water proof it. If you want to keep the window for light, then I'd look at a film you can apply to it for privacy, still get an exposed pipe shower head, but you'll need something to attach the middle piece, similar to the wood you have now.

I used a paint-on waterproofing on my window sill (actually all 4 sides of the window opening) and on the cement wall board surrounding the shower as well. Most have heard of Red Guard for doing this, I used a similar TEC product: https://www.menards.com/main/flooring-rugs/tile-stone/tile-installation-maintenance/tile-waterproofing-surface-prep-systems/tec-reg-hydraflex-trade-waterproofing-crack-isolation-membrane-1-gal/7002745011/p-1512978148199-c-6590.htm?exp=false We then installed a sloped sill (similar to Corian) and caulked it to the window frame with clear silicone. IMO, it sounds like your contractor has the right idea. The remaining 3 sides of the window opening had cement board installed, water-prooofed with the TEC product, and then ceramic tile installed using thinset and grout.

Wow, that is quite a window. Keep in mind that with your dimensions, that will be one very heavy window. Is there going to be a sill? If so, a person falling would probably hit the sill and maybe not even touch glass. I'm not a fan a glass block anyway, I think it may be a little outdated, and I'm no glass expert, but before deciding, I would call a glass company and see what they say regarding strength and what would happen to tempered glass should body hit it on the way down to the floor. I think it just breaks into harmless pebbles. Also my understanding is that shower window glass has to be tempered to be in code, but maybe glass block is an exception.

Danie Jo, many thanks for your thoughts. The shower used to be a sunken shower so the window was higher to the shower floor and was above a built in bench. We've filled in the shower as the sunken feature was unsafe. Now we have the window to contend with. There is a 4 - 5 inch sill so good point about it providing some protection. I too am not a fan of glass block so hoping i can make the tempered glass option work. Good point re: double checking if it would be in code. again, thanks so much for your help!
