Comments (27)"I wouldn't have either. IF it is torqued to spec. I wouldn't touch it again unless absolutle necessary." yeah, trust me i won't - hopefully it is in there good and will withstand the vibration of the engine. "Looks like the hole that originally was leaking?" yes, the leak was right above this screw... i'm starting to think the guy probably stripped the screw and put some thread lock or something similar on it and just screwed it back in there. after i realized it was stripped i pulled it out and it had what looked like some really lightweight aluminum or aluminum-like substance wrapped in the grooves of the bolt. this of course could be aluminum but seemed to be a little too brittle for engine aluminum. again, this is just a guess. "Now do me a favor and email me what camera you used for the pictures and how you got them from the camera into your post. I think you have my email address." sure thing! i'd be glad to Walt. the camera is a Fuji e510 5 megapixel digital camera that i've been happy with... they should be quite affordable now as i got it for $150 or so after rebate almost a year ago. i'll get that email to you in a bit....See MoreCan I see your tile pics/18 inch tub/shower surround?
Comments (12)Although the window CAN be operated, my landlord, for the whole time I lived there (about 5 years) requested that it NOT be openned. As for the trim and molding, yes it's wood, and it wasn't holding up well. When I pulled it all apart, the window trim and sill completely splintered, in spite of my being as careful as I possibly could. So right now, the trim is holding up nicely, because it's all brand new stain and urethane. But I give it a couple of years, and it'll start to deteriorate, as well. The ONLY safe way to have wood in a shower is to completely seal it up with a marine paint. Anything less, and you're asking for trouble. But I don't know what I'm talking about. Just ask my ex-landlord. He'll tell you. He didn't even want me putting in a backsplash in the kitchen because he was afraid I might not know what I was doing. He only allowed me to do this bathroom because we were having problems with the existing walls deteriorating, and as a result, leaking into the downstairs apartment, and he figured he had nothing to lose, being I was doing it with leftover materials, so it didn't cost him anything, save for a new shower valve....See MoreI'm losing sleep - I need someone w/a vision - plans inside (pic)
Comments (11)The house faces North - so the back (where the room will be) gets a lot of morning light but is shaded in the afternoon - sun hits the front of the house in the afternoon. DH thinks that having 5 tall windows side by side (with 6inches of drywall in between) might look to busy. I think he's thinking of wanting to do a series of wider windows. THe reason that the builder did this though was to match the 2 windows that are in the exisiting family room. The contractor already got the structural plans for the 5 windows (have to put steel poles in between each window). We'll have no wall space to think of though- only place for a TV would be above the fireplace....See MoreNeed advice about shower leak (pics included)
Comments (8)Thanks for all the great suggestions! Update: We removed the board from the wall and did a couple of experiments once we could see better what we were dealing with. There didn't appear to be any water damage behind the tile on the wall, just to the drywall and wood right near where the shower meets the wall. First, we ran water (without someone standing in the shower) and didn't see any water seeping out. Second, someone stood in the shower. When water splashed off the person and ran near the corner we could see a tiny trickle of water between the metal and the wall. Once everything is dry again we will re-caulk that area (DH is good at caulking, thank goodness!). Once that is dry we can re-test. Hopefully, that will correct the problem. If not, we will call someone out to fix the hairline crack, but we are fairly sure (as other posters have stated) that it is not the root of the problem. I posted this in this forum and the plumbing forum because it wasn't obvious to us if this was, indeed, a small repair (which it appears to be) or if it could be an issue with plumbing behind the wall that we couldn't see. I have been a member of these forums for several years (particularly kitchen and home decorating) and see people post questions in multiple forums quite a bit. Especially if the issue is not straight forward....See MoreRelated Professionals
