what’s causing lines on roof?

Hello all

I am seeing lines across my roof that has me concerned. What would cause this? We do have foam insulation if that is a factor?

At least from the photo, it looks like deliberate decorative detailing.

I thought the same thing. They look to be perfectly alike and evenly spaced.

Yes, the venting is along the entire ridge. The roofer did this when I replaced the roof--I had talked to him about how hot the upstairs was in summer in spite of the pot vents, and he suggested a power vent--which he installed in addition to the ridge vent. Mine is not in the old eave vents, but is through the roof. He did not block the eave vents or tell me I needed to (but they were pretty well blocked by the replacement siding already). It also was/is very noisy--enough to awaken us when it came on at night. He replaced it, saying it was a faulty unit. Still noisy, and as we got into autumn it was coming on in the middle of the night when temps fell to around 40F. He couldn't explain why. I was worried that it would be pulling heat out of the house when I wanted to keep it! So I called the company that makes the vents. They told me that one reason it was so noisy was that it was designed for a much larger attic than mine (which is only about 500sf), and very likely was not getting enough airflow. That is also when I learned that mixing venting systems causes neither to work effectively. They told me some things to do to the stat to keep it from coming on at inapprop. times too. The radiant barrier insulation is very light, it comes in big rolls and looked like foil-coated bubble wrap (at least the type I've seen). It is stretched across and stapled to the bottom of the rafters--the plywood is laid on the top of the rafters--this leaves a channel for airflow between, from the soffit to the ridge vent. So if you have rafters you can add the barrier. I remember how hot it can get in SOCal and how expensive utilities are--I would add the barrier if I had the coin to do so. Don't see why coastal rea would be an exclusion though.

Thanks for sharing the This Old House method of lining a cast pipe. I had my pipe inspected with a camera yesterday. We found a deteriorated break (bottom left side) vs a snap break just before the pipe makes a downward brand. I feel the downward bend is due to my raised front entry that you step down 5” to a Hallway or Den. I feel my cutters have been hanging up at the start of the bend due to seeing bent metal vs snapped cast. I hope the liner will work and be the most economical. Helpfully this will be the only damage since 15’ of pipe was replaced before this point and it all showed to be still good since 03.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Another down side is I was not cleaning to my 4” line in this 2” line compared to the camera’s measurements. My 50’ cable was coming up 15’ short compared to the camera. The entry, trap, cable cage and a 45 degree across the 10’ kitchen area accounts for maybe 6’+ differences vs 15’???? It appears and sounds to be draining fine but I can see and know there is a problem at this point and grease and Etc 15’ to the 4” line (in the 50’ wide house). This would have been detected in 03 if I had let the Tech pressure clean the line to the 4” line (for an additional 100.00) vs me thinking I was cleaning enough. I will try to share a PrintScreen shot taken with my camera from my screen LOL to show the damage. I have had trouble capturing Pics from the video the Tech gave me. Has anyone in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Dallas/Fort Worth area had a 2” cast pipe repair using the epoxy sleeve method and by what company?? PS. I hate to think my wife is trying to get me to move from our 1973 purchased home, enlarged/enhanced in 1977. I’m ready if we can match the comfort of this 70’ X 120’ lot Holding my 2 trailers and Stuff.

I am so sorry. We had something similar happen with our framing, except there was no discussion about it beforehand - they just made a mistake. When the mistake was realized (shamefully for them, I was the one that noticed it - not the framers or GC!) we first consulted with the architect to determine what exactly was going to change internally as a result of the roof changes they made, then went back to the framers and negotiated a discount to keep it mostly the way they built it (they had to change a few things to be per-plan but not everything). I would follow a similar path if I were in your shoes. Get a FULL list of outcomes from this roof change. If you (and the code officer) can accept them, negotiate a discount on your framing cost. I don't think it even matters that you verbally approved the change. He also verbally told you that it would not cause internal changes and he was dead wrong, so you only agreed to that kind of change, not the change you got. And try to look at it this way. Your house isn't wrong just because they didn't follow the plans perfectly - it's unique!

"It sounds kind of silly, but it looks like it belongs in front of a more contemporary house. It's too modern for my house! " I find this a very odd notion :-) There is nothing particularly contemporary in style about a Japanese maple. They have been planted in Japan for thousands of years. With the right complimentary plantings, there is a cultivar suitable for any style of architecture! I would opt for a JM over messy, deciduous ornamental grasses any day of the week!! Especially for an entry garden. "If weed killer was sprayed, you can’t plant anything or will have to replace dirt around each planting." Just an FYI but this is not at all true. Most herbicides/weed killers retain minimal viability in the soil - they have to interact with growing plant tissue/foliage to be effective - and you can generally replant the area within a couple of days. The product label will always provide this information.

Got a picture of your roof installation? I'll bet the lines line up with the roof jack installations. Took a little more shingle to make it over the jacks?

Maybe they shingled from the top down and the lines are where they had to tuck the shingles. That would explain the consistency of the lines better than my roof jack theory.

You asked about what is causing the lines. Are the lines there all the time? Did they just recently appear? Were they there when you bought the house? Have you just had your roof replaced? Is it all sides of the roof that do that?

I see patterns on the roofs of my neighbors when we have a frost or snow where the heat rises up and melts the frozen precipitation between the joists and makes lines that run laterally up the roof. But, that is not all the time.

I have never seen a roof do that. They sure do look perfectly symmetrical! I am going to suggest that it is the work of aliens who are signaling a safe place to land their alien spaceships.

Who else could get as perfectly symmetrical as that?

Quite possibly the joints from the roof sheathing. Is the sheathing 7/16" OSB or 1/2" Plywood with no clips by chance?

agree with Chessie. Either the previous owners, the builder or who ever installed the roof should have a much better answer.

it looks like most of us are just wildly guessing.

I am still going for the alien landing theory.

Look like you have an extra row of roofing material at those lines. Looks intentional to me.

I have seen these feature lines on a wood shingle roof. The typical way to achieve it is to lay down a line of cedar/ redwood bevel siding and shingle over. Gives a wide reveal and makes for an interesting roof.

ETA that this roof looks like 3 shingles were stacked with a narrow exposures to create the built up line.
