I would not tip--I am sure the tip is in what they charge you.

If they do something extra, like move or return the furniture not included in the quote, yes tip. (I would also probably tip if they were pleasant and kept the area clean.) $20 for each installer.

Never for a job. Only like maddielee said, moving furniture or some extra they didn't include. ☺ People in the construction industry are craftsmen. They want respect. They want to use your bathroom, fill their water bottles, be treated like human beings.

Every professional I've used I either tipped or provided a lunch or breakfast. This is to show that you appreciate the job they are doing. Funny thing, when I had professionals at the house for a long term job they would bring me breakfast every week or so.

We don't, but we always stock the fridge with cold water, coffee in the morning, let them use the bathroom and I usually have some bake goods for them.

Once, when I did a week long driveway pour and I knew the crew, I keep a cooler full of drinks on ice, on the front porch. The last day I barbecued hamburgers on the grill for them.

Then I got the bill. I was charged for lunch breaks and commuting time to & from work. The one guy, accidentally dumped a can of Mountain Dew on the colored cement, twice. It leached the color out of the "colored" cement. I had to do color patches on top, No one was any happier for my "investment" in their happiness. Just my 2 cents.

I never tip people working in the skilled trades at my house. I've had months long projects, same people or contractors of various sorts for a week or longer. I paid well for the work, offered water, bathrooms, friendliness, sometimes beer at the end of work on Fridays, that was enough.

Tips are for the menial jobs where customers are expected to contribute to the worker's wages. Like in restaurants, getting your hair cut or nails done, You don't tip the mechanic who spent half the day working on your car. Nor the nurses or physicians when you have a medical appointment.

Especially not if the people doing the flooring work own the company. You've already paid them. For their employees, it's the owners responsibility to pay an acceptable wage that job seekers can choose to take or leave. It's not expected that the customer pays extra for the person doing the job they're already well paid to do.

Movers, however, expects tips, and I've had them demand them. I've had installers tell me that they were not allowed to accept tips.

To me it depends. I had a lot of brush and saplings removed last year by an landscaping company. They went above what I had seen in previous groups that did a halfway job. When the bill arrived I added to it and asked the company to divide it among the people. I have also been known to give money for lunch.

I did check with a person that was sent out to do something a couple of months later if the crew had received the extra.

I tip or buy lunch if they do something extra (make sure my old shower door fit into the new space - saving me a lot of $) or have to work for a prolonged time in the tight space under my house. I give the cash directly to the workers.

I have never heard of tipping for such work, nor do I know anyone who has tipped. Water, bathroom use of course.

Maybe this varies by area of the country and by how you view those doing the work and your own past work experience.

Examples of tipping in different areas of the country; tipping the postman or the garbage service. I've heard of it but have never know anyone to do those in the areas I've lived. Tipping a barber, hair stylist, waiter, waitress seems to be universal.

I am of two minds on this. We do tip , but not automatically. If we are especially pleased, and if they go above and beyond, we do of course. We do generally provide bottled water, and have infrequently bought lunch. If it's a tradesperson with their own business I do not tip ( plumber, electrician) but for other construction services I do. The guys who installed the countertops - of course it's their job but they were extremely diligent and courteous ( and I really felt for them wearing masks in the heat and carrying that stone. and waiting to be sure we were pleased).

I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate some extra cash. I don't tip big$ but I think it's always appreciated.

We had some hardwood floors installed last year and we tipped the guys (who were not the owners), because they went above and beyond, including fixing a door that was sticking, which had nothing to do with their job. If they had simply done the job, we might not have. We do tip the postman and trash guys, which is common around here, but not the plumber, electrician, etc.
