Please click on each photo to get full view. I think I need to get the 96 inch curtain and hang it about 96 inches up from the loft floor. I guess I just need confirmation that this is the right thing to do before I spend an extra $200.

I would do window shades in that location.

The shorter curtains will be more appealing in my opinion as these are along the stair case. If there are curtains you are sure to use then do not go for longer ones. Though these are wonderful.

The short ones will look better. Floor to ceiling are too formal for the style. I think they will look sort of like this.

I do agree that a roller shade is a wiser option. But if you prefer curtains. Go full until the floor.

I personally wouldn’t do drapes in a staircase. Especially with kids involved. (Can you say Tarzan?) Even without kids, I’d consider loose cloth as a hazard on stairs.

Roller shades, only as long and wide as the windows. Or Roman shades.

I agree to the idea of no drapes on the staircase. In some cases it might create the illusion that the stairs aren't there. So be sure to not camouflage the steps.

I originally planned to do a roman shade, but a friend suggested fun curtains and I fell in love with these. (eld616, I will have to check out that roman shade site, it looks cool). I had envisioned hanging them like Partim suggested but when it came time to hubby hanging the bar I started googling how to hang curtains and panicked. My children are 10, 13, and 15 y/o so I am not worried about Tarzan scenario, lol. Very good comment from Yvonne about the illusion that stairs aren't there; I hadn't thought about that. I still really want to use these curtains as I found coordinating pillows, a clock, and cool frames for pics of the kids surfing and at the beach. I think the comment about hanging them high and it looking formal is a good point. Also, even though I am 6 ft tall, I don't think I would be able to open and close the curtain on the stair side if they were hung too high.

You sound very set on the curtains, which feels like a shame. Those windows are so inset, that they are almost begging for an inside mount shade. Like, mentioned above, curtains in that location feel like a bit of a hazard, kids 10yrs+ or not.

Have you considered keeping the fun accessories and then purchasing a large surfer print to coordinate with the theme you're so excited about instead? Curtains just feel like a misstep here, aesthetically and function wise.

I don't think children are any more likely to pull on the curtains in this location, than anywhere else in the house. It's not as if they can swing over the staircase on them. The curtains are flat on the wall. Imagine them walking up the steps. They stand beside the wall and pull the curtain. It goes nowhere.

I'm all for safety but this seems a stretch to me. And I say this as the parent and grandparent of some pretty lively imaginative children.

Short or long curtains can get entangled or in the way of on an arm or leg while carrying stuff up or down the stairs making corrections necessary, leading to an unstable situation right at the stair transition. My kids are always needing to clean-up (arms full, cause two trips is too rational) and take stuff down to the kitchen or back to their room, etc. Adding some loose curtains into that scenario sounds precarious in that location.

To each their own comfort and caution.

I would worry less about the Tarzan thing than people tripping over them. A fall on stairs is no joke. arms full, looking at cell phone while walking.... hanging fabric to the floor doesn’t belong in a staircase. When people slip, trip, or fall, they grab at the closest thing.... I just don’t see curtains there anyway.
