living room Home Decorating Design Dilemma

help with adding character to builder grade living room

Hello! I would love some help with our living room-especially window treatments, the corner fireplace, and the large plain TV wall. I would like to keep the space light while adding texture. I also feel like there is a lot of beige. I love a coastal look and lots of whites and textures (board and batten, Wainscotting, crown molding etc). I attached some photos (I didn’t have a photo without people in it so blurred them out). Any help to make this space come together is appreciated!

Hi Cee Smith, It really is a personal preference. You may just want to keep an eye out in the lighting department of your favorite big box store. Also, keep your phone handy and snap a pic of lights you like on other houses. Your home isn't such a strong style that it will dictate the light fixture. There are some homes, for example, where they are clearly Victorian, or Mid Century, or Prairie, or Bungalow, etc. Likewise, you don't want a fixture that yells a particular style either. I agree though, a little larger, and not too ornate. Could you show us a closer photo of what you have?

Hi @turtlexings24, Thanks for the compliment. I am very happy with my GC. Folks on here probably won't think it was wise but...It was me. I GC'd and designed our bath renovation after striking out with about a dozen others. It was stressful but nothing I couldn't handle. Gannt charts, spreadsheets, and research kept things organized. My job is flexible enough to allow me to wfh and adjust my schedule as needed so I was here for every subcontractor and inspector. We did hire an advisor/project manager who connected us with all the subcontractors we needed, Home Improvement Partners. Troy was great and saved us a ton of time hunting for all the individual professionals we needed.

The problem, of course, is that the bulb is tucked up inside the housing so the light is directed only downward. You could install something like the retrofit Halo SMD whose flat lens is slightly below the ceiling resulting in light dispersed in all directions, including reflected off the mirror. If you could remove the housing from the ceiling, you could replace it with a canless fixture such as this Juno WF6 or Halo HLBSL whose lens is flush with the ceiling. I’m a fan of layering rugs. Maybe you could find one with the coastal colors you like to add to the top of the other rug.

also are you going to move your ottoman to the front of the sofa?

i think some nice curtains hung close to the ceiling would look nice and add texture.

I like your inspiration room. I love the texture of the planks.

Hi! Thank you for the ideas. Regarding the ottoman-I’ll move it back. I forgot it was there as we often move it so our kids have more room to play :)

I love the planks but not sure it would work in that space given the fireplace wall? I would love to add texture somehow or lighten the wall color but maybe curtains would work!

I added a few more inspiration photos too! I love the photos but not sure how to make something similar work in my space.

I do think you need some drapes or sheers on your windows. Here is a lovely textured wall surrounding a fireplace and TV. You could do something like this on your TV wall over a longer credenza. There are lots of textured wall products that you could use - wallpaper, stone, tile, etc. Or you could do some floating shelves or artwork to add interest to wall.
