Probably oak due to age and width but that’s a guess. With any wood floor the most important think is to prevent sand and other abrasive particles from getting on it so frequent vacuuming and removing street shoes goes a long way. Never use something like Murphy’s oil soap as it leaves a film that attracts dirt (weird huh?). Do use a ph neutral cleaner sparingly. Bona makes a good cleaning system. Avoid all ‘polishes’.

Looks like oak to me too. In addition to sweeping, vacuuming works well. You can also get a dry mop with a microfiber washable cover - dampen then damp mop the vacuumed floors. I do use a hot vinegar water mix to damp mop the kitchen and dining room to clean the floors well.

Definitely ask the previous owners how they care for the floors, as the finish will determine what you want to do. We had floors like this growing up, and my parents had to use a paste wax product/buffing machine every so often. Again, the finish the is on the floor will dictate the care.

For sure, you can keep them clean with frequent vacuuming and light "damp" mopping with water and a microfiber mop.

Evaluate the existing finish and how worn it is. The time to do a refinish is when the home is empty and before you move in.

ask the owners what they've been using. what you don't want is a build up of waxy products. Like Murphys wood soap.

looks like red oak. you can have those completely stripped and refinished. now is the time before you move in.

Oak floor.....and the statement about vinegar "wearing away the finish" depends on the finish. shellac probably will...solvent based poly won't be harmed by a weak vinegar solution and it will remove some dirt.
I have lived with wood floors all my life. Varnish and paste wax when I was a kid, Had Bruce prefinished floors in the first house which had to be paste waxed every 6 months....and one drop of water left too long left a black mark....then on to oak with a shellac finish which wore easily....and finally to oil based poly. best yet!
Oh and i am talking about a long time frame, I am 84.

Looks like red oak. I have factory-finished glossy red-oak floors. Regular vacuuming and cleaning with a damp (not wet) mop (just plain water) gets the job done. The dampness will not penetrate the finish but you need to be careful that water does not get in the space between the planks.
