Help, new siding, sideways 60s ranch needs curb appeal
Comments (10)I am confused. Is the long side with brick facing the street, the long side with siding facing the street, or the short end with the garage doors facing the street? Well, obviously the garage side is connected somehow to the street, but you know what I mean. Anyhow, the thing I have to add is that I ran into a problem with my decorative full-view screen door when it was a few years old. The big screen frame would not stay stuck into the channels of the door any longer. It was as if all those times I opened the screen door with my body up against the screen, instead of my hand on the frame, came back and bit me in the butt. Looking at it, though, I could see that there was room for a lot more than just the spline that was supposed to be holding the screen in place in that slot with the screen. That gave me an idea. So I measured the width of the screen and went to Lowes and got a piece of plexiglass that was wide enough to fit into the screen door opening and partway into the slot on each side. I got it a couple of feet shorter than the screen panel, however. When I got it home, it snapped right in with the screen into that slot. It snugged the screen up tight again, too. I left a foot of screen open below the plexiglass and a foot of screen open above the plexiglass. That creates a chimney effect, drawing cool air into the space between the doors and up and out of the space at the top. Ta Da! No more saggy screen frame, a strong surface to lean against when I enter and exit with full arms as I did everyday for work, and an air-cooled front door. Since I put the plexiglass on the inside of the screen, you can't even see it until you are right up near it. This is the solution I found for using the Full View storm door with a nice fiberglass or steel front door. I got the strength of having the glass panel in place during the hot part of the year when I could not use the glass but had to use the screen insert in the storm door....See MoreNeed Curb Appeal / Exterior Help
Comments (95)Where did you all get the software to change the look of this house? That is a great program and I would love to be able to do that and try different things. I like the idea of landscaping around this house. What a difference it made. My house is in need of some work around the front also. I bought some stuff from a wrought iron website for the outside of my home. A welcome sign, house numbers and some small trellises for my garden flowers. Also I bought wrought iron hooks - kinda like s hooks that I could hang plants from for my side porch. The wrought iron does not take away from the plants because it is so dark it just blends in yet when someone really looks they can see how beautiful the hangers are instead of just white hangers or yarn hangers or something. It adds to the beauty of my home subtley and that is just what I was looking for. There was a site that had everything I needed. Now my place looks nice but I need some flowers, plants etc for the front....See MoreCurb Appeal: Window Box Question
Comments (11)Are window boxes typical on Colonials? They can be beautiful for sure. I too have gardened for years now and one can always spot a novice or someone with a lot of time for watering on their hands. Container gardening means TIME, a lot of TIME as these small containers dry out quickly. The higher the window box the more breeze they will absorb and again dry out. I have been watching a home I pass on my way to work. A homeowner installed window boxes on windows over a garage. S/he was diligent in keeping them looking fresh and appropriate for each season. I bet now they used daisy's method. The last few years they sit empty, brown moss in a metal framework. You will be putting some serious holes in your home for installation. Your options will be to keep the boxes up or live with holes if you give up on them. Window boxes come with real challenges. Be sure you are up for them....See MorePainting shutters Navy and much needed curb appeal
Comments (12)If I take the shutters off the front of the house, you don't think it would look dull and as if something was missing? No. As they are now, it looks odd and as if the shutters were tacked on as an afterthought since they don't even try to appear functional. It will look bare to you at first because you're used to seeing it with shutters, but to a pair of fresh eyes it will look more crisp and less cluttered. it sounds like most don't suggest that I paint the front door, rather are you saying treat it but keep the color as is? Yes. It's a beautiful door and should be restored to its former glory! Colour can come from flowers planted at the foundation, and a pretty brick walkway like in @Beth's example....See Morerandirotjan
