sub Zero Built in Refrigerator - water dispenser yeah or nay?

Considering upgrading to a built in 42” fridge during a kitchen Reno. I think side by side though a little less space than a French I think it is more me.
Problem family is very accustom to water / ice external. Do not love the subzero external water and ice dispenser or the look of it/location. However the internal dispenser requires 2 handed operation and seems like such a hassle and waste of cold air to open door each time water or ice is desired.
Would love opinion, ease of use, etc.

Is there a reason you’re considering the 42” and not the 48”? I have the 48” sans water dispenser and I’ve never regretted the choice.

We have the internal water dispenser and love it. Not a two-handed operation and fills very quickly. I thought the same about opening the fridge to get water but got over it quickly.

I cant comment as to the monogram, but we have had the KA in for 3 months and have no major complaints. Its been fairly quiet. The water on the door comes out through a filter and it tastes good enough, that I have considered getting rid of the bottled water delivery. We dont use tons of ice, but the icemaker capacity is very large compared to my last kenmore. I paid about 5500 and couldn't justify spending 7000-12000 on the sz even though the one w/the glass door looks amazing. As to the lights looking cheap, I dont know what the lights should look like, but throw a few items into the fridge and I dont think you'll notice at all. My only complaint was on the door shelves for the fridge side. The fronts come up fairly high and items dont come out as easily as I would like, but I have gotten used to it. Good luck.

I've had a KA for a little over three years and I've been happy with it so far. I had nothing any more upscale than a basic Whirlpool fridge prior to this - Whirlpool brands have served me well - so this was more than adequate for me. Some good friends needed several repairs on their relatively new SZ fridge and went out of their way to recommend I not get one. Obviously lots of people are delighted with SZ but since people I actually know were not, that did influence my decision. I did want a built in with cabinet panels and KA was outrageously expensive enough - no way I was going to pay thousands more than that. For that I would expect flawless performance for at least 15 years and I just don't think they make appliances that way any more. What might have been great quality 20-30 years ago I really don't think is the same these days - SZ or otherwise.

I don't think it is any secret that ice and water dispeners in the door are prone to problems, but I still like them. We've had them in every frig we've owned (GE, Amana, and now Subzero) and they've all had issues. No leaks, but with the GE and Amana the water tended to freeze up and stop dispensing. The Subzero has worked much better, but is still finicky and refuses to work from time to time. That said I'd still get ice and water in the door on my next frig. We recently bought a second home that already had a Viking frig with an ice maker, but no dispenser in the door and I miss it.

If the Sub-Zero is a built-in then you will need to do more than just remove the top shelf. It is designed to be completely surrounded by cabinetry. If you go with the Kitchen Aid then other than the water and ice being internal it really is no different than what you already have and you would loose 3" in width.

@megs1030 you have the 42" side by side? The dealer indicated it was a 2 handed operation. The french door water is not, but I think I prefer the side by side.

@Sammy I do not have the space for 48" If I could I would, but I am already giving up a little cabinet storage for a built in and a wine fridge in the kitchen as well. it is either a 42 built in or the standard 36" which i would do counter depth as I do not want to lose storage from my current capacity which is a 36" counter depth.

@AmyRD, sorry, I misread your post. I have a 36” column fridge with internal dispenser.
