Stair Handrail Installation

Hi, this is my first post.
I'm in the process of redoing my staircase and railing and I'm wondering about the handrail Installation. The existing handrail uses an iron railing system in the fillet of the rail. I'm either looking to 1) reuse the iron railing system and replace the railing wood from oak to maple or 2) ditch the iron railing system and completely redo the railings from scratch. My understanding is that for each change in direction, a newel post is required.
However, when I get to the second floor of my house, this existing rail has multiple 90 degree turns of the railing without newel posts.
My question is this - does a iron railing system require a newel post for each direction change? I've seen a lot of stairs images on the internet that do not have the newel posts.
