Painting board and batten

looking to break down some of the wood in our home

. Would it look weird to paint the wood panels the same color as the wall and leave the baseboards and door/window trim as is?

Well, it's been done.

But that wood is so, so lovely, and so characteristic and fitting with the architecture of the house!

I think if you want to "lighten the look" you can do what they do in Europe and England in older homes (not old by our standards, old by their standards) with a lot of old architectural elements.

You can have more transitional furniture with clean, elegant lines in lighter colors (but interesting textures,) maybe a dramatic jewel tone here and there and throw in a modern accent piece or two.

This way, you are respecting the architecture and design of the beautiful house you chose to purchase or were lucky enough to inherit, but you are infusing it with a more contemporary style compatible with the current era and your own sensibilities.

(And do condition and polish the heck out of all that wood!)

Oh, but feel free to modernize the kitchen and bathroom if you need to.

They must be like laboratories, totally functional, totally clean.

No It wouldn't look weird. It will look brighter. One exception? Paint the ENTIRE wall half and columns and wood trimmed header to the "addition" in the background. in your second picture, along with the picture rail in that room.

northernester, Here are a couple of pics of our house, sorry it took me so long to get a pic, this time of year, it's leave for work in the dark, return home in the dark. The siding is Hardiboard, pre painted, in Mountain Sage, trim is Hardie Sailcloth and the windows are Eagle, in Cinnamon. The pics aren't the greatest, sadly, it looks like mud season around here when it should look like a winter wonderland. Good luck with your decision, amd you have a lovely home, a 3 car garage in a waterfront home, that's great.

Smart choice. We have Maibec Nantucket cedar shingles. Look great but when the sun hits them we get constant popping sound. Saw where there was a class action suit not too long ago. Building a garage and don’t want to make the same mistake. Did you go with board & batten?

The Chelsea Building Products website says Everlast composite siding is a mixture of polymeric resin and granular stone. The Intertek Code Compliance Research Report CCRR-0201 says it's made of cellular (foamed) PVC with a chemically bonded acrylic cap (containing the color) with no mention of the granular stone which is probably some kind of stone dust. The report requires the siding to be installed over structural wood sheathing. The 4.5" and 6.875" reveal horizontal lap siding must be fastened every 16" with 2.5" s.s. screws or 2" roofing nails into the wall studs and the 11" reveal vertical board & batten siding must be fastened with 1 5/8" s.s. screws every 7.5" into the wood sheathing (which is a lot of screws).

@houssaon - haven’t painted yet! Beach glass is lighter than what’s currently on the walls with a bit more green. I like option 3 @Jennifer Hogan - those are neat but too modern for the aesthetic I’m going for in this house. @modpod - haven’t painted yet. The only trim in the room is baseboards/door/window casements. I’m concerned the room would look quite anemic being all white with one accent wall. I do agree it’s classic but as the room gets very low natural light I feel like it might look a bit like a hospital ward? Once I remove the carpet and have the floors done I’ll be adding a large rug under the bed (to extend around it as well) with blues, greens, and creams. I might add a lighter throw and body pillow cover but bedding is set for now, just bought it and love it. I’ll think about the curved option but feng shui discourages mirrors in bedrooms and I feel like adding more things (art/mirrors) above the bed will make the room feel even more lopsided than it already does. Definitely in the very early stages of design but I very much appreciate all of the feedback! Thanks all!

I would paint it all or none IMO a mix never really works and IMO the wood is not all that lovely since I much prefer wood with less grain and for sure get rid of the wood blinds .

Yeah......... make me state my true feeling. I get DEPRESSED with wood trim. All of it for the most part. Unless you have a room full of fabulous........ : ) or a tongue and groove ceiling........ or, or.

I couldn't live in Craftsman, unless...........but that is ME. I save reverence for funerals and ....: ) wellllll I just need light and fresh.

The wood elements feel a little exaggerated and over sized...scale wise...painting it will eliminate the added distraction of the dominant grain pattern as well...

leaving the normal trims (door,floor ,window ) in the wood finish...seems like a good idea...especially if they match the floors well
