2 story fireplace design dilemma

I have a 2 story fireplace I need help with. I have 2 mirrors I like but not sure which one would go better in the space. Both mirrors are about the same height 82 inches, but one is 40 inches wide and the other is 28 I think (I can’t see it while writing the post it keeps losing my post if I leave app). Dimensions included on the skinnier one. Anyways the opening in the fireplace arch is 44 inches.
Which one do you think?
Or neither?
Or any other ideas? We do not want any tapestries(this was the only other idea suggested to me in the past).

Neither. The stone of your fireplace is the 'star', now you just need some accessories. I'd recommend something that is 3 dimensional. An arched mirror is just too static.

I agree that tall walls are not for decorating all the way up. Generally you decorate down at human level and leave the high spaces as restful travel for the eye. The exception might be if there's a balcony or other room overlooking the high wall, for which the upper reaches thus become "eye level" and can appreciate very tall art. I don't understand what kind of high ceiling becomes "hellacious emptiness," but maybe you just don't like your house, or have decor that's making it feel heavy and empty rather than soaring and light. If the former, I'd move; if the latter, I'd post some photos and maybe we can help you humanize the lower reaches so that the heights don't oppress you so.

I don't even think it needs a new mantle, just a giant piece of art. OP, since you said you like boho, I do still think the fireplace should be painted for that look. if you look up inspiration photos, boho rooms tend to have solid color backdrops since the decor is so full of color and patterns. (those brick colors look really 80s to me, not the best backdrop for the current boho look IMO.) however like the others said, you might want to wait. paint the trim, decorate, live in the space for a while. it might grow on you. painting brick is super tedious. you'll want scaffolding because you'll have to stand up there for many hours. I'm a DIYer at heart but would 100% hire somebody to do that one. so you might want to give it some time and see!

The ceiling to floor is certainly dramatic. They are probably quite expensive so I would 100% go with Mark's logic. I had a 2 story area like this when I was younger, and I left it bare. It was North facing with lots of trees. Never once did I need to block sun or get privacy - in fact there was nothing on the lower windows. But the 3 other directions would have a much greater likelihood of needing window treatments. You would definitely want 120V up there. Can't imagine changing batteries - if they could even handle those long/heavy curtains.

Sammy, I have learned that there a numerous equestrians out there and if they live in the country it's not a bad accessory. Better than the live one.

Found objects are great items to use in unique places.

Many years ago, Kenneth Turner, an international renowned florist, used to assemble these garden tool sculptures and sell them for $$$

I don't care for either one of these mirrors against the stone. Unless they reflected a fabulous view or chandelier I wouldn't do that.

I would try to come up with something unexpected. We don't know your style, so it is hard to suggest the right idea. This ladder vignette made me think of a big antique ladder with some interesting tapestries folded and hung over a few of the rungs.

This is the rest of the decor In out living spaces. We do have a rug in living room not knowing pics that is cream/beige color. Horse head not our style. We are pretty simple but I feel like something needs to be there. The stuff we have up there now is just stuff from our old townhome.

Lots of pattern going on here, so keep it simple. Adding a mirror with gridwork is not the way to go.

I would drywall to the top portion and make it fit the size of your room. It's not between endlessly tall windows, it will always dominate and overwhelm the room and everything else in it.
