Can I mix eldorado stone with red brick? I have photos!
Comments (8)The problem with this house is not the exterior finishes; it is the out-of-place, unfinished look of the low flat roof especially with the bright white edge trim on red brick. You need to get a sloped roof on it or put up a well designed perimeter railing with a darker metal edge trim. There should be no problem with adding the railing to the existing roofing if it is a single-ply membrane. Having the posts there beforehand would not have made it any easier but you might have to open up the ceiling below. Find an architect who knows how to wrap the posts so the flashing is not showing. Comments (2)what a beautiful house! I'm all for painting brick, but not this one. it's gorgeous. it's your trim that needs painting, nothing else. right now it melts into the brick. there is no contrast the other main thing to do is pruning and landscaping. right now it's quite overgrown and messy looking. Hire someone to landscape, tidy it up and plant new, and hire a painter for the wood trim ONLY, posts and trim around windows A copper roof over the upstairs window would look amazing! (if yours is, then polish it!) look at the copper over this window...and the dark rust colored trim work. this is in Houston search Tudor brick homes to get ideas on what colors you like. drive around your neighborhood,,there must be other similar homes....See MoreCan you paint exterior brick wall? or How to "renew" the bricks?
Comments (43)Here's the link: https://www.progressive.com/lifelanes/household/painting-brick/ To be clear and so we're all speaking in proper context, the 3 to 5 year recommendation is about REGULAR HOUSE PAINT. Which I have repeatedly stated that regular house paint is not the best product to use to change the color of brick. 30 years ago there wasn't the range of product to choose from like we have in 2019. Also, from the same article. And, again, to ensure everyone has proper context... "The Brick Industry Association also advises using a porous paint for exterior brick walls, so the brick can breathe." " Zumeta recommends looking into having your brick professionally stained, rather than painted. Although it can be more expensive, a brick stain penetrates the pores of the brick, unlike paint, which simply sits on the surface. It creates new color without some of the long-term risks that come with paint." In addition, the article speaks to the substrate. Which I also mentioned earlier in the thread because it matters. Bottom line is it's not okay to make sweeping, generalizing, fear-mongering comments about the pitfalls of painting brick without specifying product and substrate. The details matter. Lastly, from the article, this is bad advice. Which makes me question the article overall. I wouldn't use Super Paint exterior on normal substrates let alone brick unless the budget was Super tight for painting normal exterior substrates. JMHO: “Choosing a high-quality paint is vital for painting brick successfully,” says Watson. Both Watson and Crocker recommend using specific masonry paint products for painting brick, starting out with a conditioner and a primer, and then using a breathable latex exterior or interior paint, like Sherwin-Williams’ SuperPaint Acrylic Latex."...See MoreIs is okay to have Stone on the Exterior and Brick Inside?
Comments (4)My opinion may be off from the rest but I have ZERO masonry on the exterior but will have some brick accents inside. Our exterior is mainly board & batten and reclaimed lumber. I will have a brick wall in the master bathroom, as well as the dining room. Debating about my fireplace on the lower half having some brick...our foundation has the support in place should we choose masonry on the fireplace. Again, my home has no masonry on the exterior....See Moreroccouple
